Title: Beech Avenue Workkhouse, Nottingham
Post by: mareanna on Thursday 20 June 13 19:18 BST (UK)
I have a relative at the Beech Avenue Workhouse, Nottingham on the 1901 census.  Was this institution actually a workhouse or more a hospital?  The return lists nurses as well as inmates.

At the time was married for a second time and had two daughters, it doesn't really make sense that he was in a workhouse.

Perhaps it was more for the mentally infirm??  Others listed there (they are all men) seem to be tradesmen, many of "mature" years, with virtually no children.

He died four years later, his widow remarried.

Any info much appreciated.

Lots about Nottingham workhouses on here

Scroll down to Forest Fields temporary workhouse - that seems to be the one in Beech Ave, and the one around in 1901

This 'Temporary Workhouse' in a former lace factory was still in operation in 1901, as a workhouse - having opened in 1896! Children were sent to the town's training institution and a number of 'scattered homes', rather than being placed in the workhouse.
