I am looking for information on a George Johnston who died in 1987 aged 61. His headstone is in Chirnside cemetery. Can someone please help. Thank you.
-
Hi
Exactly what type of information are you looking for?
-
I think he is my Uncle. I just need evidence to show me it is him for sure...therefore I need to know some information, any information I can link him to me...
-
A copy of his death cert will give his parents names and mothers maiden names
-
Already checked on SP and there is only one chap with his year of death and correct age at death but he died on the Isle of Bute. Yes he could have and yes he could have lived there and then been brought back to the borders. But I'm not sure it is him on SP, hence the questions on here. I need help with this one. Thank you.
-
Where did you get his age and year of death from
-
I have his birth cert and I also have a picture of what I have been told is his grave in Chirnside.
-
I have just checked the SP index and there is a death in Berwick in 1987 for a George Johnston b 1926
-
I have just looked again and cannot find it??
-
Where's it gone - I've just searched again and got no match. ???
I get a match if I don't put a county in which is presumably the one you found but I am absolutely certain I chose Berwick when I searched earlier.
I presume his birth cert shows he was b 1926. What was his mothers maiden name
-
Just done another search and not found anything! How frustrating is this, SP can be really bad for this

As you have found, the only Geo Johnston* dying in Scotland in 1987, aged 61, died on the Isle of Bute . Could he have died elsewhere or his death been elsewhere? Other ages within 2 years of that given are 59, Rosskeen and 59, Aberdeen. There is one aged 41, Park Circus, Glasgow (in case the headstone is wrong).
The nearest deth reg that I can find in England is Jan 1987 in Portsmouth, with a birth date of 17 Nov 1927 (George Douglas Johnstone )

Also one in 1986 in Ladykirk, Swinton and Whitsome, aged 71. That's not all that far from Chirnside and he might have died end of Dec 1986 and buried Jan 1987. Age 10 years out though - but I've had wrong ages on some of the headstones that I've looked at :-\
-
Thanks gadget, def not the 86 one, I have that one. It's really quite frustrating, I have a cousin going to the Archives in Edinburgh today and she will search the Isle of Bute one for me. Appreciate your help on here from both of you :-))

Hi ,
As CaroleW mentions any death in Scotland(after 1973) should have the mother's maiden name on
the Index.
It will have to match exactly with what is on the index spelling wise.

None of the ones that are listed do unless her surname is entered - see below
-
I have done a search with the mothers maiden name and without and tried various other search parameters and still only come up with the two in The Isle of Bute which is in fact the same one going by the REF: No: Mothers maiden name is Johnston, he was illegitimate... So Annoying!! Grrr!!!
-
Could his name have been Robert George?
There is a death reg for a Robert Gerge Johnston, Duns, 1987. Aged 61.
-
I saw that, not sure about that one but it is getting checked out today also
-
Well, the search was done at Scotlands People and the chp from Bute is most definitely not the correct one, so the search goes on. The ref no: 785/000059 does not work for some reason???

Was this death also the wrong one - just so we can "cross it off the list"
-
Hi CaroleW, I have just ordered this one just this minute. Im still not convinced it is the right chap, Not sure where the Robert would come from if the headstone quite clearly states George Johnston???? Thanks CaroleW
-
Just received the cert for the Robert George Johnston and it is definitely not the correct chap....Not sure where to look now....
-
Not sure if you've done this but it might be worth contacting the Borders council to see what they have for him in their lair books:

Thanks Gadget, email sent to them.

Hi Gadget,
Email was sent weeks ago and nobody bothered to reply, just typical!!!
I have another question for anyone able to help" Robert George Johnston b:1926 d: 1987 is the cert that I ordered, but I am unable to verify this one as it is probably the wrong person, however I would like someone to help me out in case it turns out to be a link to my tree anyway..The informant on this cert is Catherine Isabella, his wife, maiden name is Patterson.. Any help would be gratefully received, and many thanks again for the help..

Could he have died in England? The Border isn't very far away.....
I have a few "died in Northumberland, buried in Berwickshire" people in my One Place Study.
-
Give them a prod. Most councils have a section that will chase up where there has been a lack of service:

Are you sure that he's actually buried there? Is it a family stone, or just for him? People frequently listed family members in a memorial inscription, even though they died in other places. For example, one stone in my Whitsome OPS lists people who died at sea off Denmark, New Jersey, Ayton, Edinburgh and (of course) Whitsome.

Hi LezleyR, I am not sure if this chap is the correct one that is named on the stone, it is one person on the stone only...I was told he was buried here, and it is the only stone i see with that name and date, just no idea, it is really bugging me...Thank you..
