Title: Alice HODGES born c1844
Post by: guest189040 on Thursday 27 June 13 17:51 BST (UK)
One of my descendants was a James Evans who was born in Monmouth in 1841, he joined the Army (36th foot initially) and was sent to Ireland The arrived in the Curragh and ended up in Dublin from 1860

Somewhere he met Alice and they were married, son James was born in Dublin in 1864.

Then they went to India before coming back to the UK.

My problem is with Alice, I cannot find any further information on her all I have is the Wales census

Have searched on Ancestry, familysearch.org and findmypast and the above is all I have.

I am after her birth details, her parents and the marriage

Can anyone help with more information?

If anyone is in a position to search local records for a birth of Alice Hodges I would appreciate it.

Despite repeated searches I cannot find anything specific to her, I have found that there are other births of Hodges around Waterford but alas no Alice.

On multiple UK census return she is listed as being born in Waterford in about 1844.

Hi Colin,
I searched Waterford for a marriage of a Alice and James Evans.
the one that shows was a Alice Brazzell.
This is James the son, maybe you have this already.
The Wales marriage was the only one I could find.

Many thanks Magsie.

I do have James as being born in Dublin but not the detail so many thanks for that I will add the text to Ancestry.

The Monmouth marriage is the only one I can find and I am awaiting the cert from GRO.  Just how Alice came over to Monmouth is and probably will always be a mystery.  Until I found the marriage in Monmouth I assumed that they met when James Snr was posted to Ireland.

James's brother William (my Great Grandfather) was born in India and so with such a variation in birth locations for James, Wlliam and their mother Alice researching my Evans family in the UK turned out to be very easy via the census records.

Check with the National Archives at Kew if thy have his army papers.
If they have, you would be better going to Kew, the cost is expensive if they get the records for you.
I did see in a tree in Ancestry that it says that she was born in Monmouth with all the info on her parents.

I may well do that, we are down in the outskirts of London in July next year and are staying near Kew so we may very well get a list together.

I do have some info about his MIlitary service that I found on the regimental website and also an account of the history during the period James was in the Army and I also have his reenlistment into the Militia.

As for Alice Hodges, I did find that family tree when I was doing early research but discounted it as all Cencus records list her as being born in Waterford.

The marriage certificate arrived today.

Its not my James and Alice so I can discount the Monmouth marriage and the people listed there and also the Ancestry Tree which lists them.

I still think that James is more likely to have met Alice when he was posted to Ireland whilst in the Army.

There are a family of Hodges in Waterford who had daughters in 1845 and 1848 whose births I have the records for so its in the right time period for Alice to be born, its just there is no record for Alice.

So I have started another Hodges tree for these two girls and their parents, so I will just have to wait and see if any hints comes my way.

I keep searching every now and then to see if any new data has been placed online but alas I am getting nowhere.

The Irish geneaology site today has zero results for birth or marriage.

All I have about Alice is that she was born in Waterford c 1844

Any ideas?

What is it about the Monmouth marriage that confirms for you that it is not your couple?  I see that in 1881 there is a 10 year age gap between James born Dublin and William born India.  Do you have details of both those births/baptisms?  Are you certain that those two have the same parents?

In reply.

Wrong parents, wrong profession, wrong profession of James father so it is safe to assume from this its the wrong couple from the marriage cert.

Yes I am certain they (James and William) have the same parents, they are all together in the 1891 census and it shows James born in Dublin and William born in India with father James a Shoemaker so it is 100% correct that I have the right family members.  1901 census has my Grandmother James (Grandfather) and uncle James whilst her father William is away in South Africa so again conclusive proof the family is correct

Since I started this thread I have not advanced finding anything further about Alice.

I keep getting emails from the irish genealogy website saying they have new records.

I entered her details ie Alice Hodges b1844 in Waterford into the search boxes and for the first time it responded with positive results.

Not being a subscriber I cannot view them and as the day fee is £17 I do not really want to buy a day pass unless I have to.

I have bought day passes before to other sites that have responded with positive results for family member and not had any success with them hence I am reluctant to buy a pass without some form of confirmation.

So can I ask a subscriber to confirm or otherwise that the results do look like they are for my Alice?

If it does look like her I will then buy a day pass.

I keep getting emails from the irish genealogy website saying they have new records.

Which Irish Genealogy website?
I thought you might have meant RootsIreland as they do send emails but when I put her name in the free search for Waterford I get no results.

Thankyou for the information and links.

I will peruse the registers to see what new info there is.

James Evans was in the Army and the Regiment went initially to the Curragh Camp in Kildare in Aug 1860.

James William was born in Ireland and his Brother William (my Great Grandfather) was born in India.  Their birth locations have helped to confirm that I have the right people in my tree since my Grandmother was with James, Alice and James William in their shoe shop business which was on Monnow St in Monmouth in 1901 census.

Hence I have a lot of info on the Evans themselves it is just Alice Hodges that is proving difficult to find, but hopefully with effort I can find her on the registers.

Once again many thanks for the help.

Why do you think Alice's maiden surname was HODGES?

I assume you have checked the children's birth registrations on the GRO?

I searched Waterford for a marriage of a Alice and James Evans.
the one that shows was a Alice Brazzell.

So the Alice Hodges is no more, the online records show a marriage to an Alice Brazell.

Hence I have amended my Tree accordingly.

Many thanks to all who responded, the links certainly worked but were hard going trawling through them.
