Inspired by your enthusiasm for the topics "On this day in ...."
I have now created a new database in the RootsChat Reference Library for your
Ancestral Anniversaries
In addition to the monthly topics, you can now also enter a short description of your ancestors' anniversaries in the database.
To start it off (and to test it) I have extracted the data from the topic "On this day in November" and entered it in the database. (All contributors, please check for the usual typos and transcription errors ;D ). The first entries on that topic were from 5th November.
Enjoy,
Bob
Access to the database is through

On mobile version there is not a link at the bottom of each page though
That's a pity :( - you will have to make a note of the link in your favourites.
Bob
-
Thank you - in my opinion this has huge potential for linking researchers and ancestral families. As it is still under develoment, is there any chance of including a sequencing feature, especially on precise date but on surname and place as well if possible?
Thanks again.
peter
-
Hi Peter,
Thank you for your feedback.
If you go to the Advanced Search you can search for surnames and places there. I intend to add date fields in the search later.
regards,
Bob
-
I have now added the date to the "advanced search". You can search on day, month, or year or any combinations thereof.
I've also added the date to the output order, so that if you have entered the dates of your ancestor's marriage, birth, burial, baptism and death (in that or any other order), they will now be displayed in the chronological order of birth, baptism, marriage, death and burial.
Bob
-
Excellent - thanks again. How about a search by event type as well? No gratitude!
In terms of populating the database, is there any chance of a batch update? Also (if such a facility can be provided is there any problem with harvesting the data from the other "On this day" collections? (I mean me doing it manually).
Thanks again, peter
-
I think a search by event would bring up too many hits ... but I'm willing to be convinced if others think it's a good idea ... maybe in conjunction with at least one other search field ?
(memo to self: add a paging feature for the output, if more than XX results ?)
"batch update" ? - if you would like to transcribe the data to an excel table, I could then convert and transfer that directly to the database.
and/or "Harvesting the other topics" ? - same as above, if you (or any one else) would like to transcribe the data to an excel table, I could then convert and transfer that directly to the database. (hint, use the "print" button to make a copy of the whole topic in an editor, before you start :) )
regards,
Bob
-
Bob,
Yes another field would be needed as well once the numbers get bigger, it was just that I tried to get all the baptisms that were there.
Good news re Excel route - I will hopefully let you have a test worksheet (of actual data) later today. Do I need / should I get permission/approval from the original posters before harvesting their information?
peter
-
Hi Peter,
I "took" the data from november without asking, but it would be a good idea to ask.
Hmm, can I just ask a question. I only post my anniversaries on this thread, am I correct in thinking they will now be lifted onto this other site whether I choose to subscribe or not ?
The "other site" (I am assuming you all mean the database) is purely optional. I entered the details from the November topic just so I had some test data.
I don't intend to enter data from any other "On this day in ..." topics: your choice, I'll leave that up to you :)
Bob
Perhaps you can send them a PM, with a link, asking them to add their views here on this topic.
regards,
Bob
-
Bob,
Mmm! that sounds like more trouble/time consuming than collecting the data - I'll have to think further about how to tackle that.
Meanwhile here is a spreadsheet with 3 entries for myself for you to test/comment upon.
Is there a list of the Country and County abreviations you use?
Ah! It seems I will have to find another way to get it to you as I do not have the file in an acceptable attachment format. Await a PM
peter
peter

So after opening the Excel Spreadsheet in Word, coverting the table to text (CSV) and saving as text file:
-
Yes, that would be fine (even better is saving the CSV with quotes around the fileds, but that can be added later.
I'm showing it here, in case others decide they would like to join in (Hint !! Hint !! ;D )
day, month, year, event, Surname, Forenames, Country, County, Place , Relationship, Submitter
7, 3, 1819, Baptism, WILD, Maria, ENG, BRK, Beedon, my Grandchildren's 2 x Great grandmother, Pejic
14, 8, 1791, Baptism, DAVIS, William, ENG, BRK, Ashamstead, my Grandchildren's 3 x Great grandfather, Pejic
8, 9, 1793, Baptism, HEWARD, Keziah, ENG, WIL, Ramsbury, my Grandchildren's 3 x Great grandmother, Pejic
Bob
-
Here is some more of my actual data with double quotes around the fields. I have made a post on each of the open "On this Day" threads asking anyone who does not want the data in their posts to be copied, to PM me and I will ignore their data.
-
I don't seem able to edit an entry I've made to the database - when I click the 'edit record' button my list of entries doesn't appear. Am I doing something wrong?
By the way, I think the database is very useful, and hope more people use it.
-
Test data uploaded OK Bob - thankyou, more to follow.
Quest40 - Yes I seem to be having the same problem, but I thought I remembered editing an earlier entry, could be wrong about that - it could have been a SIT record.
-
Pejic, yes, I also managed to edit one of my first entries, so don't know what's happened? Glad it's not just me, though!
-
"Self praise is no honour" .... but guess what ... it works now ;D
(I think - give it a try :) )

Pejic's second batch of names is now in the database. It only takes 10-15 minutes to transfer them.
And just in case anybody is getting the idea this is just between me and Pejic, I'll repeat my offer:
if you want to attach your names here as a text file (see replies #12ff) I'll transfer them to the database for you too.

Bob

Best wishes, peter

Roll up !! Roll up !! .. And the next one please ..... Any more for any more ? ;D

Bob - planning my strategy for getting non-duplicated entries from "On this day . . . " to Ancestral Anniversaries - can I put a link to the original entry into the "Relationship" column? and will then clicking it in the display work?
peter
-
Hi Peter,
Sorry, but links in the Relationships field are automatically suppressed.
If the worst comes to the worst. I can always delete any duplicates by hand.
regards,
Bob
-
Just a thought:
I have a line "On this day in .... Jan | Feb | ..... " in the QuickSearch, where any anniversaries on this calendar day in those months are shown.
Perhaps another line would help ..
"In the Month of .... Jan | Feb | ..... " where all entries for a particular month are shown.
Opinions ?
Bob
-
I hadn't even found the "On this day" search!
Any extra searches are good - making it's use as a research tool more powerful. Given date "wobble" (especially regarding death and burial dates) an "in this week" search would be better (in my opinion) where you deliver dates +/- 3 days of the given date.
-
Here are the pre 1900 dates from November's "On this day", the last 6 can be posted as they are, but they are missing coding for Australia, Canada and Mexico, when I was doing my own it was easy - if I did not know the codes I just posted them the normal way, perhaps you can insert them if you have the time.
P.S. I have just re-discovered that you had already extracted the November data as a test/example - curses!

Bob - Here are the pre 1900 dates from December's "On this day", the last 8 can be posted as they are, but they are missing coding for Australia, Canada, USA and India, when I was doing my own it was easy - if I did not know the codes I just posted them the normal way, perhaps you can insert them if you have the time (or tell me how I can discover them).

Thanks Peter :)
I've added everything to the database.
I use the following codes:
AUS - Australia
CAN - Canada
IND - India
USA - United States.
There aren't that many "foreigners" so any others I can add by hand :)
Bob
ps
P.S. I have just re-discovered that you had already extracted the November data as a test/example - curses!
Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt !!! Join the club !! ;D
-
Bob - here are the pre 1900 dates from the "On this day in January" thread. It seems to be much quicker / easier entering the stuff from the threads than it was loading my own!

Hi Peter,
date uploaded.
It seems to be much quicker / easier entering the stuff from the threads than it was loading my own!
Perhaps because you had to search for your data within all your files, whereas here the data is all ready for extracting ??
Thanks for your work on this,
Bob
-
Yes - that is most of it I suppose, but there is much less sidetracking as well!
Anyway here are the pre 1900 events and dates I found in February's "On this day"

and June with the last lot of my second submissions, seeing how the Ancestral anniversaries database works with more records in it I obviously have to re-visit my in-law's ancestors - I initially only entered tight ancestors but obviously cousins give much more scope for connectivity.

P.S. one of the May batch seems to have lost its submitter - so I have repeated it in this batch
