Title: Link: Pubs past and present, of Sutton and the surrounding areas
Post by: Mark1973 on Monday 08 July 13 13:27 BST (UK)
I made this googlemap for my history group and thought it might be of interest to some.

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=211577995063690032433.0004e08748e96d19c79fb&msa=0 (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=211577995063690032433.0004e08748e96d19c79fb&msa=0)

The map shows the past and present pubs of the area, still work in progress, soon hope to have all the pinpoints showing pictures and history info. The green pinpoints are current pubs, yellow are pubs which are no longer but the building still remains, and red are demolished.

Thank you very much for this. My husband and I were born and brought up in Sutton, and lived there until we moved out to 'Surrey proper' (between Chertsey and Woking) in 1977, so we remember a lot of the pubs that have now gone. So sad, but SO interesting from a nostalgia point of view.  We're now well away from that area, on the south coast. We've just had a semi-sad chat about a lot of those pubs. Well done on your labour of love, and good luck with the rest!

No problem, glad you enjoyed it :)

Sitting upstairs in the Green Man whilst my Dad worked downstairs is one of my earliest memories!

Sutton is my main interest in that map and eventually each pinpoint will have a picture and history.

We were so surprised that so many of the little pubs in Carshalton are still going! Not likely to go back that way anymore, although we did visit the Green Man in Ewell (obviously not the same one) a number of times when one of our daughters had been visiting her boyfriend's family home.  Now they're both living in Fetcham, we've no reason to go back anymore.

I was born and bred Sutton too, you're not missing much!

No the Green Man as the one near the top of Sutton High Street, now an O'Neills.
