Now that's a tall order. I have nothing I can input for this one, so over to the older Blyth folk who might be able to help.  ???

Would you like to see a map of the area and Red House as it was in 1898?

The Red House Farm is still here in Cowpen estate, but the name is now "The Percy Arms.
I well remember when Cowpen Estate was being built,  and have family living there today, but know of no photo's of construction .I could take a photo of the pub as it is today if thats of any help.

Thanks for the replys but i was led to believe that the Red house farm was alot older than "the red house pub" which is now the percy arms plus it looks a total diffrent shape and size on the old maps and seems to be where the present day gareston close is

ive just checked durhan gis maps and the original red house farm was demolished in the 1950s and the present percy arms was not there until 1951-1959 so it seems they are not the same building.

Here's a view westward looking over Blyth circa 1932.

I have posted the full size original here, try it full screen;

thanks for the photo i really love seeing cowpen estate before it was built but i think judging from the 1930s map that red house farm was 2 fields from the railway line which is still there so will be the small dark area closer to malvins close in the picture.

Yes, you are quite correct. I assumed which is never a good thing to do. I should have known better! Quite what the farm or structure is I do not know. First time I've paid any real attention to it. There is no name given for the site on any maps and it was much larger by 1937. I have done some more field counting and matched up existing field boundaries with modern maps and that building stood at the kink in the track which runs by the end of Thorntree Way. I used to walk along that path as a kid with my mum and dad and later it was part of our cross country route when running from Bebside Middle School as it was then. I never knew there was a 'farm' there. It was much reduced in size, possibly even a ruin by the time of the 1961 map for the area.

Most interesting diversion from the original subject matter.

Greenwood's map of 1828  showing the big wide open space that would eventually be filled
by Cowpen Estate about 125 later.

 http://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/006972FS.htm

Map shows Red House Farm (today in Brierley Road area) and Cowpen South Farm ( about
where Newsham Road meets Princess Louise Road)

Other maps show another Red House just north and inland from Seaton Sluice.

Cowpen High House, now derelict in Front Street, Bebside, was a working farm in my day
 in early 1950s.

We were rehoused from the Bebside hovels ( no running water, no electricity ) in 1952 to Weardale Avenue ( two flushing toilets).  The Grey family got No. 1 Weardale. They had lived in the Toll House in the Ha'penny Woods.

The digging  of the foundations for the estate provided a great " playground" for us kids !

Have found someone else living there too - Robert Harding in the 1891 census.  Am trying to find out more about him as he was also left £100 in Henry Sidney's will. Any help?

The Sidneys were the local " Lords of the Manor" and owned Cowpen Hall and much surrounding
land, including the Red House Farm.

I probably need to take a better look at the Sidneys to see what the connection was with Robert Harding.  Very unusual to see that amount of money left to someone outside of the family. Thanks Michael

Go to the following and load a map of Blyth.

http://www.keystothepast.info/Pages/pgResult.aspx?SEARCH=Blyth

Move Malvins Close to the top right-hand corner and then select older maps 1938-51. Right in the middle is the Red House farm.

Eddy,

 " Bebside Schools"

Do you refer to the schools within Bebside Colliery village or to later schools built adjacent to Kitty Brewster ?

If you use the "Keys to the Past" maps and mark the position of the Red House farm on the 1938-51 screen and then move to the present day, the farm is where Redesdale Place is. That is just off Axwell Drive.

It's just like Blyth, full employment, high wages, world's best standard of living, a health service that works, great schools, an integrated public transport, mountains and lakes. The cheeses are very good but cuckoo clocks originate in the Black Forest region of Germany.

Now I would welcome Blyth having any of the above (the geography might be tough) but the last time I was there it made me despair and that was in March. The great grey desert, aka Market place; the Coop closing, the litter, the lack of shops, the crumbling infrastructure, the lousy public transport, the empty pubs on a Saturday and that's after 13 years of a labour government, much as I have little time for the other parties, Ronnie and the council have some serious questions to answer.

The Red House Farm was farmed by the Buglass family who later moved to Newsham Farm . The lands of both farms were built on and the estates were named after the respective farms .

I am just searching for memories of New Years gone by, and then found this. The Red Hoose, or the Percy, we had many good times in that pub in the 1960s=to early -70s, especially on New Year's dinnertime.  One year finsihed first footing at 8 a.m., off to bed.but then turfed out by wor Mam at 12 noon.  At the Red Hoose the first pint was like vinegar and poison combined. :D The 2nd one , well,... and after that when the closing time was 3 p.m. we went first footing again. :) Eventually getting the bus to Blyth for a session, where we finished the night at the Market Tavern, just above Woolworth's and Soulsby's butchers. >:(

I know it is a long time since the original post was made, but yes, I do now have a photo of Red House Farm! Came across it quite recently and bought it, snapped it up.

I hope there is still interest in the subject.
