Title: Thomas Tipple b 1851
Post by: TimWooley on Friday 12 July 13 18:28 BST (UK)
I am looking for help finding the parents of Thomas Tipple born 1851, All Saints South Elmham, Suffolk, England.

He is not in any census with his parents, however, does appear in the 1851 census with his Grand Parents Thomas Tipple c1788, All Saints South Elmham, Suffolk and Sophia unknown b C1802 Dennington, Suffolk, England

Regards Tim

Hi Tim,

A warm welcome to RootsChat  :)

If I have the correct Thomas Tipple then there is no fathers name listed on his marriage to Maria Sheldrake.  It looks likely that he was the child of one of the unmarried daughters that were living with Thomas and Sophia on the 1851 census.

I agree with Mosiefish - one of the witnesses when he married was a Mobbs.   Sophia Tipple married a George Mobbs in 1869 by which time she'd had at least 3 illeg. children.   Would suggest that Sophia was his mother but can find no online baptism and the only way to confirm would be to get his birth certificate.

Hi Tim and welcome to Rootschat  :)

Probable birth certificate would be:

Thomas TIPPELL, March Quarter 1851, Wangford registration district, Vol 13 Page 567

Wangford covers South Elmham.

Hi Tim

I have checked the transcripts I have for the South Elmham's & cannot find a baptism of a Thomas Tipple 1851.

I did find Thomas Tipple born 12 Sep 1788, bap 21 Sep 1788 & received 10 May 1789, South Elmham All Saints.  Son of Thomas Tipple & Martha (mn Gibbons).
The same couple also bap a daug Sophy on the 11 May 1795 not your Sophia I know but could be a good link.

Thomas Tipple married Martha Gibbons 13 Nov 1787 South Elmham St Cross & St George

& this may have been a previous generation
Thomas Tipple married Elizabeth Bridges 20 Oct 1759 S Elmham St Margaret.

Adelaide Tipple had an illegitimate daughter Rosanna, who was my husband's great grandmother. I have not heard of her having any other illegitimate children before her marriage to George Mobbs, which I have as 4 Jan 1865 in Alburgh. Sophia had an illegitimate daughter Laura Lavinia Tipple bapt Earsham in 1855. Laura died only a few days after her baptism. In 1861 Sophia is living in Spexhall with a niece Zubah. Next door is Caleb Tipple age 7 lodging with James Brown, who would later marry her younger sister Harriet Tipple. I haven't managed to establish Zubah or Caleb's parentage yet.  Adelaide, Sophia and Harriet's mother was Sophia Perry married 20 July 1821 in Redenhall. I have tree back to Thomas Tipple and Elizabeth Bridges. This Thomas was born abt 1730 but I have not found out where. As there are no other Tipple families in the S Elmham villages contemporary with him or earlier, I suspect he came from elsewhere.

The birth of a Caleb TIPPELL was registered in the Wangford RD JunQ 1852 Ref 4a/669

Couldn't see a Zubah but did find this one also in the Wangford RD, fits with Zubah's age in 1861

Azabah TIPPELL reg SepQ 1846 Ref 13/505

Hi Lizzie,

I have an interest in the Harriet who married James Brown, their son George born in Bungay 1871 was my partner's great-grandfather.  I also think the link is back to Thomas Tipple & Elizabeth Bridges.

I suspect that the Martha Gibbons who married Thomas Tipple 13 Nov 1787 was the Martha baptised 10 June 1764, Wingfield, illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Gibbons and that her father may have been Thomas Matthews, carpenter, of Syleham.  Does anyone have any definite information about her?

Hi Robert,
Have you details of your Harriet Tipple's parents? The 1881 census gives her birth year as 1841, if correct a birth certificate should be obtainable. Thomas Tipple and Sophia (nee Perry) had a daughter called Harriet but she seems to be a bit older (born pre 1837). However a birth place of All Saints for your Harriet does fit with where Thomas and Sophia lived. She may have taken a few years off her age for some reason. Harriet and James Brown's marriage cert should name her father. If she is Thomas and Sophia's daughter there is definite link back to Thomas Tipple senr and Elizabeth Bridges

The theory of Martha Gibbons parentage, I discussed in a PM with you about 3 years ago.

Hi Lizzie,

I've only just come across your post, I didn't receive a notification of it.

Harriet's date of birth is rather variable.  Ages and calculated years of birth at census etc are

1871 34 (1837)
1881 40 (1841)
1891 55 (1836)
1901 66 (1835)
1906 73 (1833) death

Of full age at marriage and father appears to agree with the Thomas who married Sophia.

Mentioning Martha Gibbons was an attempt at fishing to see if anyone else had any information.

Regards
Robert

Trish :)

Trish kindly found all the possible matching Sophia's it is certainly not Sophia Mayhew she married David Fairweather in 1825
Sophia Allum may have married Charles Baldry Read
I have been unable to trace Sophia Holmes, so by default it could be Sophia Perry d of John & Mary Perry (nee Creasy)....possibly!!!

They may have Reg their last Childs Birth.

Sept 1837, AXIA Tippell, Wangford, 13 341

Cert would confirm Sophias maiden name :)
