Title: Henry/Harry Parker Swimming Professor Ilfracombe Devon
Post by: Smokey807 on Tuesday 16 July 13 22:46 BST (UK)
Im looking for information about the Parker family. I have a 1901 census taken at The Baths at Ilfracombe,Devon listing as head of household Henry Parker born 1849 at St Lukes,Middlesex, the son of William Parker (b1826 Essex) and Louisa Parker (b1826 Hadlow,Essex). Living with Henry Parker is his wife Ellen. Ellen was born Ellen Rowe 1857 at Monmouthsire,Wales, the daughter of Robert Rowe(1830-1884) and June Bynum Scump(1834-1925).Also living with Henry and his wife are their children Henry Lloyd Parker, born 1892 at Ilfracombe and two other children (which I have no interest in).

Henry Parker senior was a famous Victorian swimmer who is referred to in all newspaper accounts as "Harry Parker". In the 1901 census Henry was the manager of the baths at Ilfracombe. His son Henry Lloyd Parker is most often referred to as Harry Parker junior and was a well known swimmer in his own right, who also worked at the same baths in Ilfracombe as his father.

For reference and more information about Henry senior and his son see the website www.tunnelsbeaches.co.uk who have a souvenir booklet with photos etc of these two men and other information about the history of the baths. This booklet was published in 2010.

Here is what I want to know (1) when and where did Henry's wife Ellen die (2) when and where did Henry Parker die (3) What happened to Henry Parkers son Henry, who I found in the 1911 census as a visitor at Tottenham,Middlsex with the Matthew Maylam family.Henry junior is single,a professional swimmer. With Henry junior is his 15 yr old sister Helen Louise Parker. After 1911 I have no information for him.

Also of interest to me is what happened to Henry seniors sister Miss Emily Parker, born 1861 at Clerkenwell. She was a famous swimmer also and there are lots of accounts of her exploits on the internet. The last record I have for her is the 1881 census at Clerkenwell where she is age 20, a teacher of swimming. Any details about her getting married/children and death are of interest to me.

Good Afternoon
Sorry to say I've not got what you wanted but I though I'd pass on what I have and it may help.
Henry Parker senior is a widow on the 1911 census in Ilfracombe so wife Ellen must have died 1901-1911.
Henry Lloyd Parker is in the 2nd/4th Oxfordshire and Bucks Light Infantry in WWI-can only spot medal card.
London electoral register
Spelthorne 12 West Road London 1938
Frank Parker,Henry Lloyd Parker ,May Hilda Parker and Sarah Harriet Parker.
I know it's not much, but maybe someone else will spot more.

ps there is a Helen Parker age 46 died Barnstaple Sep 1902 5b 274,could that be the wife?

Regarding 1911 census for Henry Parker. What did the census say about his occupation and who else was in the household?

From FreeBMD - Deaths
Henry Parker, age 84, Barnstaple, Dec 1932, 5b 506
Ilfracombe comes within the Barnstaple Reg District

The North Devon Journal reported Professor Harry Parker celebrating "three score years and ten" on his birthday Monday 12th Sep 1918. The above death would fit Harry's age in 1918.

Would the person who sent the information about the North Devon Journal in regards to Henry Parkers birthday and death be able to send me a scan of the two articles as I am interested in more detail about what else the articles had to say about Parker. You can sent by personal message if you prefer.

Now that his date of death has been established as December 4,1932 ( working back from the article dated Thursday Dec 8,1932 to "sunday last") can anyone provide information about where and when he was buried? Is there a photo of his headstone? Is there an article about his funeral?

From 1901 census the two living children were Henry Lloyd Parker, born 1892 and Ellen M Parker born 1896. Henry Lloyd Parker, according to medal index card, served in WW 1. Didn't find any military record on Ancestry or War Graves Commission record that indicates he died in the war.Don't know what became of daughter Ellen M.Both of these children were born in Ilfracombe,Devon. It appears that Henry Parkers wife Ellen, born 1857 Wales died sometime after the 1901 census and before the 1911 census as Henry senior was recorded in 1911 census as a widower. Havnt found her year of death yet. In 1901 Henry was age 52 and his wife age 44. Although not impossible they both seem a bit old to be having children after 1901 so the other children must have been born before 1901. Henry and Ellen had no children listed in 1891 census. They were married sometime after 1881 census and before 1891.

Hi
I didn't realise you hadn't got their marriage.
They married Barnstaple Dec 1888 5b 901
Henry Parker and Helen Henrys.
Helen was a widow and her maiden name was Rowe.
I can't find her first marriage but it must have been before 1881 when she is living with her parents Robert and Jane as Mrs Hellen Henrys in Ilfracombe..

Thank you for the death information. Its no wonder I couldn't find the death of Henry's wife for she is always given in the census records as "Ellen" and she was born as Ellen Rowe. But death for "Helen" fits so date of death and place of death make sense.

Still trying to find out what happened to Henry's sister , the famous swimmer Emily Parker.Last record I have for her is the 1881 census at Clerkenwell where she is living with parents William and Louisa Paker and her brother Henry and sister Alice. In that census Emiley, age 20 is given as a "teacher of swimming". Emily born 1861 Clerkenwell,Middlesex. Her swimming accounts are mostly in the mid to late 1870's where she put on swimming performances with her brother Henry. In 1874 she performed at the Warrington Aquatic Fete ;at the Rochdale Swimming Fete and at the Wellington Street Baths in Leeds when she was only age 13. I know she went on to be an instructor of swimming but I havnt found a single mention of her performing as a swimmer during her adult lift.

Hi Smokey
I did a little more research for you.

Please note that Alice is recorded as Niece in the census household and is a cousin to Emily Parker.

The First Marriage of Helen Rowe:

Helen ROWE married Simon Wilhelm HENNYS (June Qtr 1877 Barnstaple district).
She was born in Newport, Monmouthshire and he was born in 1852 in Cornwall, before he and his parents moved to Bridgend.

At the time of his marriage to Helen he was a Baptist Minister at Maesteg, South Wales.

In 1881 he was living and working at his Father’s Green Grocery business at Bridgend. He is no longer a Baptist Minister and he died 2 years later during the Sep Qtr 1883 at Bridgend.

In 1878 after a short period of time and not at fault, Helen left the marriage.

In 1879 she was living back at the Ilfracombe family home with her parents.

I have a report as to the reason of separation and I will PM this to you,
Hope this helps with your research.

Regards
Schooner

Can anyone find a connection between either Miss Emily Parker or her brother Henry Parker with the town of Tunbridge Wells. The owner of a photo album presented by Capt Matthew Webb, the famous English Channel swimmer,in 1876 , to swimming professor John Pearson Luker in Tunbridge Wells, father of famous swimmer Miss Annie Luker, has in it two photos, one of Miss Emily Parker and the other of her brother Henry. Capt Webb and Professor Luker were obviously close friends and since most if not all swimmers in the 19th century knew and in some cases were friends with one another I wondered if there is some newspaper account that makes a connection with the Parkers performing their swimming skills in Tunbridge Wells, where there was a large outdoor baths which John Pearson Luker was the performer/swimming instructor at? I have made an inquiry at the Tunbridge Wells library but they don't have the staff or time to search their newspaper files. Perhaps there is some announcement in a newspaper of London or Devon etc where the Parkers lived.
