Title: Dower Clonmel
Post by: noland01 on Monday 22 July 13 11:07 BST (UK)
Was just wondering if anyone on here is or was researching the surname Dower.
Reason I am asking is that I have a small bit of my family tree to resolve and have reached a dead end.
Think (almost certain!) that this is the family I am interested in;

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tipperary/Inishlounaght/Rathkeevin/908650/

My connection or otherwise is complicated and vague.Basically have a great grandmother who am unable to place regarding birthplace etc.The Dower connection comes from an obit. of her son who died in Waterford in the 1950s;

Her son Patrick(O)Byrne died in Waterford in 1951 and the mourners included a Mr and Mrs Ml Dower Clonmel as cousins of the deceased.From the paper;

"The remains were received at the Cathedral by Rev. W. Hallinan, Rev. P. Power officiating at the graveside.
The chief mourners included Mrs Margt. O'Byrne (widow), Mr Timothy O'Byrne (son), Mr Denis Nolan (nephew), Mr & Mrs ML Dower and Mr David O'Rourke Clonmel (cousins). "

Tried  many variations and combinations of Dower,O Rourke,Mullins,Mullen,Byrne etc. on Familysearch, RootsIreland ,Ancestry, etc. but without anything definite jumping out at me.

Have tried this angle before in the general Ireland thread but decided to try it here to see if anything turns up.

You may have this already - had a look at possible Dower /Mullins marriages and the only possibility I could see was a marriage record for a Patrick Dower Oct- Dec 1899 Clonmel and a Margaret Mullins with the same references - However while there are a no of Patrick Dowers on both census none had a wife Margaret so it possibly is not a match. Just thought I would post anyway.

Found that before on ancestry but was unable to find them on 1901 census.Also found a Patrick Dower married to a Catherine Mullins on 16 08 1863 in Kill Waterford(RootsIreland).

Reading that piece from the obit. it may be the case that the relationship was through O Rourke and not Dower.Found this family on the 1901 census;

Was just posting to see if anyone was researching the same family.
Thanks for your interest.

noted while perusing Basset's Directory for Tipperary, 1889 it listed, Michael Dower Rathkeevan Clonmel Tipperary, I take it from the location about 5 miles outside the Town of Clonmel that they were Farmers, however I can recall while doing research some years ago, this very unusual name cropping up, at a very much earlier period in Clonmels History,,,,, so it would appear that though small in number, the Dower Family have had a long connection with Clonmel, when I get the chance I will throw my eye on the local Graveyard Records, and Burkes History of Clonmel, which im pretty sure mentiones this Family, if I can locate any information for you which may be relevant, I will post it back here, Ben
