Title: David Davies b1816 abt, Troedyraur, Ffostrosal, Cardiganshire
Post by: David Hankey on Friday 26 July 13 19:13 BST (UK)
There are two baptism records for David Davies at Troedyraur one on 28/04/1816 and the other on 11/08/1816. The early one has the parents listed as Thomas & Mary Davies and the later one Evan & Elizabeth Davies. The question is which one is mine?!!

I understand David married an Anne (no other details known) and they went onto have at least one child, James, b 1862.

David is shown as a Master Shoe maker on 1871 Census at Troedyraur.

Can anyone help, please.

Regards, David

Hi, keyboard86,

This could well be him although I don't have any other children other than James who wasn't born until 1862. On the 1871 Census I have David, Anne & James that's all.

If this is the family I guess Mary 10 years on would have either got married or be living in as a domestic elsewhere. I'm sorry I don't have anything else to go on.

Regards, David

Just a thought, keyboard86, does it list David as shoemaker on that 1861 Census?

Sorry, keyboard86, my mistake.

I thought this might be the family with the 1861 information you found earlier but I'm not convinced now given the 1841 and 1851 details you have found.  I've also had another look at the 1871 Census detail I have and it gives David's age as 53 which would make his birth 1818 and not 1816 although I do know the ages shown on these early Censuses weren't always accurate.

The 1881 Census lists him, Anne & James (no-one else) living at Bwlchyronen, Troedyraur with David shown as Shoemaker Master aged 65 making his birth year 1816!!

I've been looking for the marriage of David & Anne but there are so many listed between 1844, when Anne would have been 18 and 1852 when Mary was born. My guess it would have been registered at Newcastle Emlyn and there is a dozen to pick from.

Davies and the Welsh not an easy combination I know.

Hi again David, just got back to this one, re age variances, would not take too much notice of a +/- 2 years as ie all searches I and I am sure most of of us carry out is with that sort of age variance.

The David in 1851 bear in mind is at the same address as that in 1861/71, the 1841Census marriage to Sara would appear to be this :-

David Davies Full age occ Shoemaker Father David occ Labourer
Sarah James Full age Father John occ Labourer
5th Sept 1839 Troedyraur

Could it be then that Sarah David's first wife died between 1851 and the 1861 Census and he remarried to an Anne because the 1861 Census clearly states Anne is his wife.

That being the case I've just had a look at the deaths registered in that decade at N. Emlyn and there are a dozen or more!! It doesn't get any easier does it?

Thanks again for your assistance, David

;D Hi David just bear in mind the Hannah in 1841 could be the 11 year old with David and Esther in 1851?

See if you can locate the baptism of a David father David?

keyboard86, understand what you are saying and I'm sure it is.

I think also Esther was probably the sister of David given their ages. Does it say as much on the 1851 Census? If you could check for me I'd be very grateful

Cheers, David

Blimey, keyboard86, are we saying he had THREE wives?!!

Sarah shown on the 1841 Census, Esther on the 1851 and Anne shown on the 1861.

And here I was thinking that he was leading a fairly mundane life as a shoemaker but it appears there were some very tragic circumstances as well to contend with.

;D That is what has been causing me all the problems, other than the 1839 marriage, I cannot locate a parish record in Troedyraur?

There is a marriage of David Davies to Esther Jones at Bettws Evan/Ifan 2 miles down the road from Troedyraur on 11/11/1844

There is also a marriage of David Davies and Anne Davies at Henllan on 18/05/1852 but it's minefield and I really don't know. David

Hi, keyboard86, I'm been checking again and don't think the marriage at Henllan fits the bill because of David's occupation is listed as a Labourer.

A marriage that is more likely could be the one in 1856 to Anne Lloyd at Troedyraur. Would you mind checking the details for me on that one?

I really am very grateful to you for all your help to date.

I'm fairly sure the 1839 marriage to Sarah James gives Daniel as his father, not David-consistent with the 1844 Esther Jones marriage.
There is an 1856 marriage record to an Anne Lloyd under Troedyraur,Carmarthenshire in one datasbase but the David is given as a bachelor.

Hi, Roger,

Thanks for your input and like your Rootschat name I am in despair!!

Daniel was David's father name. It's the marriage to Anne that is now causing grief as she is listed as David's wife on the 1861 Census along with their children Mary & David
