Title: Cannot find an Ellwood marriage
Post by: Gigi on Tuesday 30 July 13 13:59 BST (UK)
Hello All,

I have the marriage cert for John Ellwood widower & Margaret Richardson widow née Parker 16/12/1840 Kirkby Stephen Westmorland. I have not been able to find John Ellwood's previous marriage & as far as I'm aware there were no children from his first marriage.

John Ellwood was b1807 & baptised St Michael's Appleby son of William Ellwood & Anne Simpson. I have looked at previous John Ellwood marriages (IGI, freebmd) but find the couple living in the census.

Any ideas?

Gillian

Hi

Thanks!

Where did you find that?

I didn't see that in familysearch.org.

From the Boyds Marriage Index - no other detail other than names though. I had a quick look at the census and couldn't see a corresponding Sarah - thought it might be worth looking at  :)

No sorry - actually from the Faculty Office Marriage Allegations. Just gives the names and the dates.

I've had a quick look on FreeReg in Cumberland and Westmorland but can't see anything  :(

Greetings Gigi

This may fit John Elwood = Ann Hall 1833 St Michaels Appleby
It seams John was living in Garbridge area of Appleby in 1807
The only Ann Ellwood Death is for 1869 so I don't think thats her

Hi,

Yes I have seen the John Ellwood Ann Hall marriage too. However, I have found them in the census so it cannot be my John Ellwood who later went on to marry Margaret Richardson (nee Parker) in 1840.

Gillian

Hi Gillian
I can't remember where this John Ellwood lived so don't know whether either of these are relevant (and he would have been a little on the young side) but just in case:

25 Mar 1826 Westmorland Gazette
At Bolton, near Appleby on Thursday last, John Elwood of Crackenthorpe to Miss Bate of Bolton.

16 Sep 1826 Westmorland Gazette
On Sunday last, Mr John Ellwood of Spittal to Miss Agnes Hoggarth of Aykrigg End.

19 Dec 1840 Kendal Mercury
At Kirkby Stephen, on the 16th inst, Mr John Ellwood to Miss Margaret Richardson both of Soulby.

24 Mar 1849 Kendal Mercury
On the 16th inst at Knock near Appleby, Mr John Ellwood, yeoman, aged 41 much respected.

regards
Deborah

Hi Deborah,

Thanks.

The one at KS is my John's second marriage to Margaret Richardson née Parker.

The other two could be possibles. John would have been 19 yrs old.

He lived at Bongate but was at Smaredale at time of marriage to Margaret in 1840.

Regards,

Gillian
