Title: a boy or a girl
Post by: dfk on Friday 02 August 13 00:30 BST (UK)
Hi
This is part of a bigger picture taken 1905/06 and I think the child is about two years of age give or take some months, I think I know who this is but need some help from other eyes as to what they think, did children of the day get dressed like this for both sexes, I can say that the other persons in the picture are well dressed (may be sunday best or for an event).
Any ideas?

David.

They certainly did dress boys & girls the same & up to the age of around 6.
Girls tended to wear white socks other than that only mommy knows.

Yes, boys wore dresses until they were breeched - i.e. went into trousers. Dresses for baby boys was partly for practical reasons, as it made nappy changing and toilet training easier. Good link here http://www.museumofchildhood.org.uk/collections/clothing/boys-dress/

I think the photo might be of a  boy because of the dark socks; but of course I could well be wrong.    As others have noted, is notoriously difficult to tell the difference in many photos, unless the child is holding a girlie doll or a hammer  ;D

And even then some small girls might be fond of carpentry and have indulgent parents.....  ;)

Thank you to every one for your thoughts on this , I can say that with what family info I have I also think the child in the photo is a boy, his name would be  John and was born in july 1904.
My next mystery with the photo would be the age of John, I am thinking he is about two years old which puts the photo at 1906?, or could it be in the summer months of 1905 making him 12 months to about say 14 months old, any ideas on this?

David.

You need to show us the whole photo + the back.A scan in colour would be better also.
