Can anyone help with information on Maud Shepherd & husband Charles William Potts 1911 census they are living at 4 Chapel Walk Mexborough Maud gives birth at Wath upon Dearne 1888 Charles William Potts gives birth 1884 Islington Staffordshire I cannot find births for either of them and cannot find them in 1901 census I would appreciate any help to locate them .

Lostris's info on marriage names is consistent with 1911 census entry of them being married for under a year.
In order to try to get to the bottom of the 'Shepherd/West' mystery, you will need to buy the marriage certificate and try and establish her parentage.
The thought did occur to me that the S in her middle name was Shepherd. She may be illegitimate, and have been listed under either name in previous censuses.
Just to throw another little interesting piece of info into the mix, there's a Maud West aged 12 born Mexborough, niece in Arthur Lidster's household in Wath. (1901) RG13/4400 folio 83 p5

She's in Wath in 1891 too - RG12; Piece: 3854; Folio: 67; Page: 9
This time as a Visitor in James Lidsters household (prob Arthur's Dad ?)

Thank you all for your input really helpful . I don't think the Charles William Potts joiners apprentice in the census is the right one 1911 census he is a train stoker on his son's birth certificate he is a railway fireman Regards

He could have changed professions, after all he was only 17 on that census. How many young boys want to work on the railways ;D :-\
As I previously suggested perhaps the marriage cert is the way to go ;) At least then you should have fathers details.

The identity of Maud West has been intriguing me for nearly 20 years. The James Lidster she was lodging with in 1891 was my 2g grandfather. She was staying with Arthur Lidster, James's son, in 1901. Arthur's wife was Ada Kemp. My g grandparents were Ephraim Kemp and Bethynia Lidster - brother/sister to Arthur/Ada.
Maud West was born 17 March 1888 at 54 Dodsworth Street, Mexborough,to Susan West, with father unknown. The birth was registered on 17 April 1888.
I am therefore wondering if the S actually stands for Susan in Maud S West ?

1910 GRO has Charles W Potts ma “Maud S West” Sep Q 1910 Rotherham RD
1939 Register has a Maud Potts b 1886 living at Mexborough with family including a daughter born 1920. GRO has the maiden name for this birth as “Shepherd”.
NOTES
Arthur Lidster’s mother was Susannah Shepherd. His wife was Ada Kemp, who had no Shepherds in her ancestry.
A Maud Shepherd was born Jun Q 1888 in Rotherham RD but moved to Grimsby and then London.
Of Susannah Lidster (nee Shepherd)’s male siblings :-
• Edward was married and living near Keighley in 1881 and near Ripon in 1891
• George William was living in Swinton throughout the 1880s
• Henry was living in Mexborough with parents in 1881 but was married and moved to Kimberworth by 1891 where he had a daughter born abt 1883
• Joseph and family were living at Swinton Road, Mexborough in 1881 but by 1891 had moved to Dodworth.
• His family included GEORGE HAROLD SHEPHERD born Mexborough 23 April 1868. Who cannot be traced on the 1891 Census but by 1901 was living at Garden St, Mexborough
CONCLUSION
George Harold Shepherd must have been the father of Maud Shepherd West
