I am now trying to find the Children of Thomas Sullivan and Ellen Rowan.
Ellen M Sullivan was born in Barbados in 1865. I think she is the daughter of the above.
On the 1871 census there is a Mary Ellen Sullivan listed in the Union Workhouse Clifton York aged 4 a pauper born Barbados. She is in the same workhouse as Ellen Sullivan aged 41 and Jane Sullivan aged 9 months but they are not listed together.
I would like to find Ellen Sullivan born in Barbados on the 1881-1891 census and Jane on the 1881 census.
In 1891 Jane is now Jane English married to George English living in Thornaby
Any help would be appreciated.

The 1881 census is free to search yourself at https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1321821

Yes I have already checked the 1881 and 1891 census over and over. I just thought i fresh pair of eyes might help. Or any other help for that matter

Hi again,
Just for information for others, here is the thread re Thomas and Ellen http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=655371.0
I notice there is a a john Sullivan born Malta in the workhouse also but can't recall whether he has been discussed also. It looks as though the birth is on Find My Past armed forces births.
There may be workhouse records.

I saw the birth for John i will have to investigate that one furthur. Unfortunately for me York Library hold the records i am looking for (i think) and they are closed at the moment.
Can i get them on line do you know.
-
I looked at York archives but they don't seem to be online records and as you say much of the documents are unavailable due to the closure :(
-
I wonder if something happened to Thomas for her to end up in the workhouse as a pauper. She obviously travelled with him previously.
I can't see Any if them in 1881. George English was in York in 1881 so the couple could have moved together or individually anytime. I can't see his family either in 1891.

In 1891 Jane is now Jane English married to George English living in Thornaby
George H. English and Jane claim to be married in the 1891 census, but FreeBMD suggests the actual marriage was the following year.
Marriage, Mar qtr 1892
George Henry ENGLISH
Jane SULLIVAN
on the same page, Middlesbrough 9d 745.

Good find. If you have the certificate, Reedy, who were the witnesses?
-
George Henry English and Jane Sullivan had a son Tom English in October 1889. The certificate makes out they are married. Tom was born in Thornaby 4 Furness Buildings.
They had another son George Henry English in June 1891 living in Thornaby 4 Turners Yard. This child died 10hours old.
Then they marry in March 1892 Jane's father is listed as Thomas Sullivan deceased, occupation soldier.
They are living in 4 Furness Bulidings Thornaby.
Witnesses are George Herbert Walker and Christina Walker.

Hello again,
There is a possibility here but birthplace is wrong.
1901 4439/38/21
Mary Ellen Sullivan 36 yrs birn abt 1865 York is a pauper patient in the North Riding Lunatic Asylum, York.
1891 has a M E S in the York Asylum

Thanks for that i will have a look at it. Hopefully it is her
-
It seems once again i am left with more questions than answers. I cannot find Ellen on the 1911 census anywhere. I thought maybe she had died in York between 1901-1911 but no.
Then in my search for more children i find a death in York in 1862 for a Mary Sullivan( awaiting the death certificate to arrive)
No births in York for Mary so i will now have to look further afield.
This is becoming more complicated.
-
No I couldn't find her either - sorry. The person in the asylum is classed as a 'lunatic' so you would imagine that she either died there or was still there in 1911.
There is a death in 1910 for an Ellen Sullivan (born abt 1840) who is possibly the one that Pels found living with Mr Raftree in 1901.
I did notice that in 1881 there is an Ellen Sullivan 16 yrs born abt 1865 in India living in Thorpe Le Street, Yorkshire as a servant.
I can't see another reference to her but wondered if India/ West Indies (Barbados) was confused re her birthplace. However, sadly nothing else to prove this.

Just received a birth certificate for a Thomas Patrick Sullivan born 25th Feb 1864 in Gibraltar. Father Thomas Sullivan 2nd battalion 3rd regiment of Foot. Mother Helen.
Can i find him on any census after this NO or a death.
There are 3 more regimental births Ellen M Sullivan 1865 Barbados Daniel 1873 and John 1862 Malta.
Maybe i should send for them also.
-
Well the time fits - does it have a mother's surname on the certificate?
Perhaps he died - the only possible record I can see in the index is a Thomas Sullivan 1870-72 Malta :-\ but that doesn't fit with the regimental record.
-
It says mothers name Helen. I saw that death but was a bit unsure of it myself.

Hi,
There is a John Sullivan aged 9 (1862) born in Malta in the York Union Workhouse in 1871.
Regards,
Kath
ADDED: Also there is a Daniel Sullivan on the 1901 census, living in Thornaby, year of birth 1866 in Hydhabad, India. On the Army birth the place was Hyderabad and the Regiment is Royal Artillery. Could this have been your Thomas and he has transferred to a different Regiment? Will go and dig some more!
-
Sorry about my ramblings with regard Daniel above, I realise now I was looking at the wrong date with the wrong child! Did have fun tracking him, before I realised he wasn't yours!
There is a death registration for a Mary Ellen Sullivan in Malta 1868/1869, but I note from Heywood's post re Thomas Sullivan death in Malta 1870-72 that this doesn't fit in with the regimental record :(

Hi Kath,
we have John born Malta and Mary Ellen/Ellen Mary born Barbados also in the workhouse.
What I think is unusual is that Ellen must have been all over the place with Thomas which I would have thought was a lot of travelling for a private soldier's wife.
I had read that the wives often did various work but it looks as though she travelled on each posting :-\
Not that I know much about the armed forces, though.

I was thinking the same thing. I did read an article about wives following there husbands and how hard it was for them.
I think i may have to send for the other certificates to clarify that it is there children.
I have been checking the birth certificate for Jane born 1870 in York and the fathers name is down as Soloman Sullivan. Maybe Thomas has died and Jane was not his daughter. Or someone made a mistake.
-
I wonder if that is just an error in transcription - 'Thomas' written in a flowery way may look like 'Solomon' :-\
What is the address on the certificate. I am sure you have mentioned it but I can't remember, sorry.
-
Union workhouse Clifton York.
-
Union workhouse Clifton York.
Oh of course! I was thinking of Hope Street ::) I think that was 1861?
I would say it was likely that it was a mistranscription.
-
Maybe wishful thinking on my part. I will find them EVENTUALLY
-
Just received the birth certificate for John Sullivan he was born in Malta 8 June 1862,father Thomas mother Ellen. Father was a Private in the 3rd buffs. So this must be the John that was in the workhouse in 1871.
However what happened to him. I cannot find him anywhere after 1871.
-
Hello again,
it is good though that you are piecing the family together.
There is this chap in 1881 4321/ 109/25 , Langthorpe Yorkshire
John Sulivan 17 yrs an apprentice blacksmith born Malton, Yorks.
I wonder if it is an error re birthplace. Unfortunately there is no way of knowing but I can't see him in 1871.
-
In 1871 he is in the union workhouse clifton york. Birth place is listed as Malla.
-

Sorry, I meant 1881.
I know about 1871 and as I said, John Sulivan b 1862 Malton (as seen in 1881) cannot be seen in 1871 so I wonder if his birthplace was misheard. :-\
-
Yes thats what i think. I cannot see him after 1881. Will have to look again.
