Title: Pashur Reader
Post by: maread on Friday 09 August 13 09:45 BST (UK)
Hi I'm looking for any information re Pashur Reader Born 1791 in Marshwood Dorset and died 1864 Middlesex England. He was married to Mary Greening. I'm trying to trace back his father and mother, but having no luck. I am on ancestry.com but cannot find who his parents were. One of his sons Charles Reader came to Australia in 1856 and settled in Geelong.  Would love any information or help.  We are his direct descendants and would love to know more about him. Thanks Mary

Almost definitely I would say that he was born n Marchwood, Hampshire. Marshwood is right on the Eastern border of Dorset, so about as far from Hampshire as it's possible to be. I can't see how anyone could write Marshwood, Hampshire in the census, and mean the one in Dorset.

I may have to take that back!

1814  Wootton Fitzpaine
Pashur REDDER m Mary Greening

Given that their first child was Mary Ann Greening Redder (1815  Wotton Fitzpaine) and they also had Jane Greening Reader in 1820, this must be the couple, and the Hampshire is wrong on the census.

The family is certainly in Whitechurch Canonicorum in 1841. Do you have them in 1851? The evidence is that they had moved to London by then:

1844   Lambeth                Eliza Greening Reader d Pasher Reader, carman m William Gomm
1851   St Marylebone        Robert Reader s Pasher Reader, carter  m Ann Fisher

When Pasher died in 1864 his age was given as 73. The following year, when his son Francis marries, he describes his father as a farmer's labourer (decd), so the 1861 census entry describing Pasher as a cab proprietor is something of a mystery. Francis Greening Reader went on to be fairly wealthy (see his will) but there is little evidence to show that Pasher did. With such a rare first name, it's surprising there aren't more references.

Have you seen these?

Given that Charles went to Australia, the family certainly spread far and wide.

There are other Readers in the censuses of about the same age, claiming to be born in Marshwood. It may be worth following them up as possible siblings for Pashur, eg:

Herbert Reader (dairyman, b Marshwood, c1799)
Robert Reader (b c1803, Pilsdon)

Both these appear to be sons of Robert Reader/Mary Duval. They had a number of children and there is just about space between Ann (1790) and Elizabeth (1793) for Pashur, although there is no entry in the register.

Findmypast says that Pashur Reader, 60 and Mary Reader, 59 are living in Bridport in 1851, but I don't have a subscription.

In 1851 Pashur and Mary are living at Lower Street, Whitchurch Canonicorum.
Pashur's birthplace Marshwood, Dorset
Mary's Wootton Fitzpaine, Dorset
His occupation - Agr Lab

Hi Richard

Yes that is them from Wooton Fitzpaine.  I thought with a name like Pashur it would be easier to find references to him but it seems not!  I have him living in Wooton Fitzpaine in 1841 and then in London in 1861 but cannot find him on a census for 1851.

I had at one time thought that Robert and Mary Duval were his parents but I couldn't make the dates add up, then I got to thinking that perhaps Robert was his brother as you suggest also.

I was wanting to apply for Pashur's birth certificate but don't know how to go about it.  Do you know how I would apply for one from here.

Thanks so much for that infomation and those links to Jane Stokes I hadn't seen them, although I knew she had gone to Utah and always wondered whether she had changed religion, Charles family were all Anglican very interesting indeed!

Thanks again for any help.
Mary

Thanks Jay, just realised you have answered my question regarding the 1851 census and that they were living in Whitechurch Canonicorum.  Thankyou Mary

Unfortunately birth certificates didn't start until 1837, so there won't be one for Pashur.

Welcome to Rootschat.
Sorry; I'm afraid I know no more than I originally posted in the posts after the one you have shown (where I see that I put 'Eastern' rather than 'Western'!).
I don't remember a Francis being part of he original thread, so you may want to start a new thread with particular questions about him as I'm sure we can help. If you list what you know in terms of place and date of birth etc, we can point you in the right direction.
