Hi all
Looking for a bit of help if I can please?
Thomas Henderson - was born c.1813 and lived most of his life in the Scottish Borders. He died on 14th March 1889 and had married Janet Paton c. 1835. However I've drawn a complete blank in finding where/when he was born, and the suggestion is he was English rather than Scottish (from the 1851 census). If anyone can add any information to the above or give me pointers on where to look I would be very grateful.
Many thanks
Stuart

His death certificate should name his parents, or at least say whoever registered the death thought were Thomas's parents. Have you accessed his death certificate? If he died in Scotland you can download it from the pay-to-view site ScotlandsPeople.

Hi JM, thanks for getting back to me.
I do have a copy of his death certificate - his parents were James Henderson and Jessie Foster (dates of birth and marriage unknown at the moment), and the death was registered by David his grandson (who I haven't found yet as Thomas had at least 8 children!). There was no David living in the family home in the 1881 census so I have a way to go yet before finding him.
I am still a bit of a novice at this, so can you please tell me how knowing his parents would help find his date and place of birth? And I hope that doesn't qualify as the most stupid post on this site ever!

on your other posting you say his mother is Jessie

That's right. His mother was Jessie, his father was James and he married Janet. Obviously something about the letter "J" ;D

the suggestion is he was English rather than Scottish (from the 1851 census).
Please can you say exactly where he was living in the various censuses, and what places of birth were given?
can you please tell me how knowing his parents would help find his date and place of birth?
Knowing the names of his parents might help to eliminate any other Thomas Hendersons born at about the same time.

Hope I haven't given you too much there, if you need any more please ask. Oh, and it looks as if the grandson David mentioned in an earlier post who reported his death was illegitimate, but definitely wasn't living at home in the 1881 census although his mother was.Was it common practice for a male member of the family to report deaths around that time, or might it mean that his mother had moved away, or even passed on herself? I can see this may become a full time job!
Many thanks to all who have helped so far :)
