Title: Help me find Felix Mcmurray
Post by: paulsplace2009 on Thursday 22 August 13 09:50 BST (UK)
Hi Everyone

I am hopeing that someone can help me....

I am trying to find out more about My 4 x Gr Grandfather and Grandmother.....

My 4 x Gr Grandfather was Felix Mcmurray and he married a catherine loughran in ireland (i dont have dates for marraige)

They had a daughter - Catherine Mcmurray, born abt 1831 in ireland (she is my 3 x great grandmother).

I only have the details for Felix & Catherine  from thier daughters Death cert.

On catherines death cert, it states felix as a farmer (deceased).

Just to throw something else into the mix.....

Felix daughter, Catherine, marries a james Duffie, and by 1869 he is dead (i have death cert), but on his death cert, calculating the dates, he would have been born about 1806, yet his wife (catherine) wasnt born until 1831, and wouldnt have been able to marry until 16, which would place the date around 1847, so she would be 16 and james would be about 41!!

So sorry if i have confused you with any of this...but i just cant understand why they would have coupled up at such big age differences!??

Would appreciate any help on locating someinfo about Felix, and also about his daughter Catherine and hopefully a marraige from irish records...

Thanks in advance

Paul

This may hinder rather than help but there is a family tree with James Duffy being born Ireland 1820 so how old was he on the death certificate you have?
It doesn't give a death for him but gives first child born 1845 so a young wife indeed.

Child born Monaghan and there is a marriage there in 1845 but I can't see to whom.

It does have the same parents you have for Catherine but :-\

Hi Paul

It's on ancestry website.
2 children listed are Elizabeth 1845 and Annie 1851 if that matches up.

Nothing else on James apart from occupation hawker then furniture dealer.

Hello

Thanks again.

I managed to eliminate this tree, as it was my uncle who started it and he has james DOB wrong.

Even though he died in 1869, Glasgow, i cannott find him on any recent census, i.e 1861.

There is one James Duffie, on the 1861 Scottish census, and his DOB and birthplace match up...but how would have he ended up in this place from Glasgow.....

James Duffy
Age: 56
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1805
Relationship: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: Monaghan, Ireland
Registration number: 411
Registration District: Burntisland
Civil Parish: Burntisland
County: Fife
Address: Black Close
Occupation: Labourer A Mason

Have you got wife and children on their own in 1861 to match James being on his own elsewhere?
Presume you have or he wouldn't be missing  :D

Glasgow to Fife excuse my ignorance is that a long way apart, could he have travelled to find work perhaps.

Hello

No, i cant find them on the census records, which leads me to believe they were still in ireland at this time.... the first census i have the two daughters (ann and eliza) is the 1881 census.

Thanks

Haven't given up yet.

What details are on the death certificate - is there an address?

I see a marriage for Elizabeth Duffie 1865 to John Brown.  That has occupation hawker for James.

the first census i have the two daughters (ann and eliza) is the 1881 census.

Elizabeth is on the 1871 census Scotland with husband and 2 children John 3 Ann 1.

Hi all

Just thought I would post in this again to get it going again.

I have tried to look on the Irish genealogy site and cannot find anything for Felix , his wife or daughter.

Can anyone help me with this?

Really would like to trace the steps of Felix.

Hi There

Your original post is a few years back and one question that you asked was re the ages.

In rural areas of Ireland it was fairly common for a young lady to marry a much older man. The first daughter may have been lucky enough to have a dowry but the rest of the daughters were usually matched off as best as the family could manage; ages didn't really factor in much; HA not like today !

Hi There

There is a Felix McMurray in Leitrim in 1857; of course your Felix could possibly have been deceased by the time the GV was taken but given the relative unusual name it MIGHT be worth following up.

I have noted that in the same area of Cloonclare there was a Felix McMorrow, HUM not sure if these are variations of one surname OR just a major coincidence.

It might be worth bearing in mind if you do route around in Leitrim !

Cloonclare's baptisms only go back to 1841 and marriages only go back to 1850, so all too late to be ale to prove or discount this Felix  :(

Hi Tara

Thanks so much for your replys and for all of your information.

Can I ask why you looked at Leitrim? I am curious.

I just hit a brick wall when it comes to Felix and his wife Catherine.

The only reason I know Felix and Catherine is because he is listed on Catherine's death cert.

Felix mcmurray, farmer.

Other than that, I have nothing.

I want to know more about Felix and Catherine and they would have went through the potatoe famine I am sure.

Thanks , Paul

Hi There

Ha !

With Ireland I don't discount ANY of the 32 counties.

I just look to see where a name crops up and see if I can find anything to back it up and tie it in to what I already have !

You HAVE to have a starting point, either to count it in or discard it.

Hey, look sure double check yourself and see if it fits in or not.

Good Luck

Hi Tara

Well, I do know that my great great great grandmother, Eliza Duffy was born in Monaghan, Ireland to James Duffy and Catherine mcmurray.

Catherine mcmurray was felix's daughter.

So this May place Felix and his wife in monaghan.

Does this help?

Thanks

Paul

Well,

I think a person can be from ANYWHERE and yet have a child somewhere else ~ so sorry no, I don't agree.

I'm not for one minute saying that Felix was defo a Leitrim man ~ I'm just saying that :

1. Felix COULD be a Monaghan man and given the time period, possibly died without any sort of paper trail and so we shall never know exactly where he was resided.

OR

2. It MIGHT be worth researching the one Felix that does appear to have some sort of paperwork trail.

HEY, nothing ventured nothing gained is my motto !

But again, if you are more comfortable with the fact that Felix's daughter had a child in Monaghan and that makes it more likely that this child's grandfather was also from Monaghan then stick with what you are comfortable with.

Good Luck  ;D
