Title: Partridge/Bedford
Post by: cupcake on Monday 02 September 13 07:10 BST (UK)

Trying to find my Grandmother, Gertrude PARTRIDGE's parents.

She was married to Percy Charles KIDMAN in 1904 perhaps, Biggleswade.

Any information on the Partridge family would be very much appreciated.

regards

When / where was she born.

ADDED - just noticed your post is headed Samuel Partridge but you are asking about Gertrude  ???

I apologise.Thought I had changed the heading

Have very little information but have the name Samuel written down, not sure if that is Gertrude's father. I think she was born abt. 1869 in Pavenham.

So, was she previously married?

Is she a spinster on the marriage certificate?

KGarrad,

Going through my mothers papers I found her mother Gertrude PARTRIDGE marriage date to Percy Charles KIDMAN 1902. Have written down in my notes Samuel Partridge Pavenham - 1869

That is all I have on the Partridge side.

I haven't got their marriage certificate. They may have married in Biggleswade.

Thank you so much for the detailed 1881 census.

Looks as if James was Gertrude's father then. Lovely to see she had brothers and sisters. Wonder if the George & Dragon Inn, Pavenham, Bedfordshire, still exists.

I told you in Aug 2009 that she was born 1869 Pavenham  & her parents were Samuel & Eliza Partridge who in 1881 had the George & Dragon inn at Pavenham.

Why not get the marriage certificate to verify this

I am thinking that this marriage took place in Cranfield (which is in Ampthill RD) as in 1901 & 1911 parents Samuel & Eliza plus remaining children were living in Cranfield & Samuel was then a Baker/Miller; while in 1891 & 1901 Gertrude was living in Midland road, Bedford being shop assistant in Baker's shop. I will check this out tomorrow.

Marriage, Cranfield 28 Sept 1904
Percy Charles Kidman age 29, bach, farmer, of Cotton End Cardington, father James Julian Kidman, farmer  - to - Gertrude Partridge age 35 spinster of Cranfield, father Samuel Partridge, baker. Witnesses Coleman Hugh Kidman & Maud Amelia Partridge.

While the 1911 census has fist child Julian Charles Kidman born Cotton End 1907, he was baptised in Bigglewade on 31 May 1908 along with brother Stanley Partridge Kidman. Julian was born 4 May 1906 & Stanley on 22 Apr 1908. The 3rd child Maurice Arther Kidman was baptised Biggleswade 30 Oct 1910, born on 25th Oct. Parents abode was Sunderland Farm Biggleswade.

I've found the probate index record for Percy Charles Kidman who died 22 Dec 1944, when he was at Green End Gamlingay; effects worth £13,177 left to his widow Gertrude.

Sorry cupcake no photos... the George & Dragon pub is now a private house.

I did find out some probate index information, Samuel Partridge of Cranfield died 11 Dec 1917 & left effects of £329.16.3 to widow Eliza. When she died 29 Dec 1925 her estate was administered to sons Fred Harry Partridge & Leonard Flanders Partridge, bakers, effects value £277.4.5. Some of this administration docs are held at Bedford Archives.

Leonard Flanders Partridge married Lizzie Clara Munday of Cranfield in March 1903 most likely at Cranfield. Leonard died 30 Oct 1946 while at 50 Ford End Road Bedford; wife Lizzie Clara died 23 June 1959 while living at 292 Bedford Road, Kempston. Also at that address is spinster Cecilia May Partridge (Leonard & Gertude's sister) when she died on 19 May 1959. Leonard & Lizzie's effects were left to their daughter Violet Annie born Sept 1905 (now wife of Charles John Munday - married 1939)

John,

Not sure whether you know this :

Percy Charles KIDMAN parents James Julian KIDMAN and Louisa KIDMAN (don't know her maiden though) are buried at Edworth, St George, Bedfordshire. The church has one service each year, on St. Georges Day. I have a photograph of their burial place if you would like it. I was there in 2004 and buried my mother's ashes with her Grandparents as, I didn't know then, her parents were buried in Biggleswade.

Do you know where Samuel PARTRIDGE and his wife Eliza are buried?

Hello cupcake

I have James Julian Kidman marrying Louisa CROUCH at Wandsworth on 9 Oct 1872.

As to the burials of Samuel died 1917 & Eliza Partridge died 1925 I don't know ?, I would suggest they are in Cranfield as that's where they were in 1911, their death indexes are in Ampthill RD. I could check the burial registers next time I'm at the Beds Archives.

Also Samuel Partridge, baker in Cranfield is in Kelly's directory of 1914. I also found in that, Horace Bernard Partridge, baker in Woburn Sands, most likely Samuels's son born Dec 1887

regards John

Hello John,

Thank you for all the information. I didn't have James Julian KIDMAN  marriage details and, Louisa's maiden name.

Yes, it is possible they are in Cranfield if they were there in 1911. If it is no trouble, I would appreciate if you could check the burial registers the next time you are at the archives.

Looks as if Samuel Partridge was still a baker 3 years before he died. So, the son Horace carried on in his father's footsteps.

Kind regards

Samuel Partridge died age 75 on 11 Dec 1917 as per Probate Calendar Entry, £329 going to widow Eliza; he was buried on Sat 15 Dec 1917; the service held at East End Baptist Chapel, Cranfield & the internment in 'the burial ground'. This taken from article in the Beds Times which says widow too unable to attend, mourners were 4 sons & 2 daughters.

Wife Eliza Partridge died or was buried ? on 29 Dec 1925 age 81 at Cranfield (Death Index in Ampthill RD Dec qtr 1925 in name of Elias Partridge)

I did  contact the Beds Archives yesterday, and they replied saying their charges start at £8.80 for a quarter of an hour. Obviously if I visited  the Archives Service search room within normal hours to consult original documents and microfilm, it would be free.

I must add our local Library has an excellent Archive department with wonderful staff who have so much knowledge. They have people contacting them from all over the world.

I don't what I would do without all the wonderful Rootshatters who have helped me with ancestors research over the the years.

Many thanks for the information.

Beds FHS have recorded the MIs at the Baptist Chapel burial ground. Both Samuel and Eliza are listed and that they died 11 Dec 1917 and 29 Dec 1925, respectively (as per John's info).

Modern maps don't show the burial ground at the rear of the chapel but it is shown on some older maps.

I managed to get over to Cranfield today (thankfully no snow today :) ).

Samuel and Eliza's graves aren't in the main burial ground but tucked down the western side of the chapel, along with a few others. The graves are close against the chapel wall but it looks like the chapel has been extended at some point, which may explain the closeness.

Attached is one of the images but I've uploaded others, in higher resolutions, to PostImg.
