Title: John MARTIN & Family 1871-1891
Post by: Aussie Derek on Thursday 19 September 13 02:43 BST (UK)
Looking for any info. on the following family..
John Martin c 1841 Dublin
Hannah c 1850 Portsmouth
Clara c 1871 Portsmouth
Ernest Edward c 1872 Kent
Maud c 1875 Kent
John c 1876 Ireland ?
Florence 1880 Ireland ?

In 1871 John, Hannah & Clara are on the 1871 English Census, John is with the Army.
In 1891 The family are on the English Census. John is chief warder at the military prison in Chester.
In 1901                       "         Scotland    "          "             "                             "           "  Stirling
In 1911                       "         Irish          "          "  is a gate keeper and on Army Pens. in County Down.

Nothing throws any light in 1881 in England or Scotland. I do know that he was chief warder at the military prison in Cork in 1894.
Any info. on this 1881 period would be appreciated. Thanks from Australia.

Hi Aussie Derek, you appear to know which prisons he worked in, don't you know if he was Royal Artillery etc, or dragoons etc. and what rank is a chief warder in a prison. I came across John Martin a Sergeant Major of the Royal Artillery in 1877 in an army index on www.forces-war-records.co.uk. non commissioned officers are probably listed annually in the Army index.
Good luck in the detail you seek

Thank you Sinann, dathai and Kiltaglassan,
I'm amazed at the response's
Everything you've all said makes sense, I've seen the marriage Cert. for William and Clara.
William was married before Clara, to Elizabeth (Lizzie) Coonan in Athlone in 1892
they had two Children Mary and Ethel, Lizzie died in the birth of Ethel.
I don't know what happened to Mary.
Two- three years later he married Clara.
Ethel is listed on the 1911 census in Down with William and Clara's children.
Williams Parents were John Wallace (Carpenter) and Mary Anne Montgomery from Cootehill Co.Cavan.
What I'm confused about is that we always assumed the Wallace's came from Ayrshire , and were Scottish Presbyterians (My DNA profile is very strong from this area-basically maps out like a dragnet from Ayrshire to Ulster, includes England for most of the rest and a tiny portion (3%) northern France-Which is where I understand the Montgomery's came from?
But Williams First marriage was Roman Catholic, as was his second.
Were John Martin's family Catholic also?
Were Williams Parents Catholic, were the family always Catholic?
would love to know,
Thank you for your help
Sincerely
CanadaWallace
