he may have been convicted in 1913, as a machinist, in Birmingham for stealing a parcel belonging to LNW Railway
Police record on Ancestry lists offences from 1901 - 1909 as well as the 1913 one

thanks for that, now have Maria's parents - see if that trail leads any where 8)
(didn't want to mention the other incidents!!! lol) :-[
thanks again ;D

considering his history I wonder if this is him :-\

I notice in 1871 Bella is visiting Reuben H J Dodwell & wife & family...mmmm
1901 Bella & William as he's calling himself now are together in Aston.
1911 has to be him in Sheffield.
I think Reuben Horton is someone else.He appears to have spent most of his life in the County asylum.
There's no Reuben Plimmer on the B'ham Rolls.
His marriage entry has his father as Reuben Plimmer (no surprise there)
& Bella is a witness.
Married at Bishop Ryder Jan 2 1898.

hi, thanks for posting
I did see an "Abilla Plimmer" in 1871 aged 21, dressmaker but dismissed it as no off-spring with her
then searching for a Reuben with no surname born 1867 in Birmingham, I stumbled upon the 1881 entry and thought it seemed an uncanny fit with his location!
I've been told the William in 1901 is another child (William Henry Plimmer) of Isabella born 05 Feb 1869 at Gower street, Aston Manor
It starts to get very complicated but was hoping to find more about Reuben (with an unusual name) but his career choice might be making it tricky to trace him!
:-[
thanks again

and to add even more confusion his mother was supposed to have married before 1901:
Name: Bilhah Plimmer
Gender: Female
Marriage Age: 35
Father: George Plimmer
Marriage Date: 27 Nov 1886
Marriage Place: Birmingham, St Matthias, Warwickshire, England
Spouse: Thomas Yale
Spouse Gender: Male
Spouse Marriage Age: 36
Spouse's Father: William Yale
and I thought this surname would be easy to trace lol ::)

I found a newspaper report from July 1901 regarding the conviction of Reuban Henry Plimmer. It states he had been married for 3 years and had 2 children. The article says that he was the brother of the famous boxer who from an 1896 article I believe was Billy Plimmer and Reuban was his trainer/bottle man. In 1901 Reuban's address is given as 89 High Street, Aston - labourer.
In December 1901 he is a private in 4th Royal Garrison Regiment in Aldershot - article about failing to pay maintenance for his wife Maria.
There are a few articles about Maria's antics in the Lichfield area in the early 1900s, seems she was quite a colourful character too.
I think Boxer Billy is in Sheffield too in 1911 and I also think it may be him with Bella in 1901 rather than Reuban (why would you give 2 sons born so close to each other such similar names - to confuse us genealogists no doubt ::)
Pinetree
From a tree online the William you have b.1869 was Billy the boxer and Isabella's mother's maiden name was Horton!
-
and Isabella's mother's maiden name was Horton!
Looks like the 1881 census is him based on that.
The marriage entry definitely says Bilhah & George Plimmer is a witness. She was living Wheeler St.

hi - wow - what a find!!!
Reuben does sound a most colourful character that I have ever stumbled across ;D
I tried researching the Reuban H J Dodwell this morning and his family in case that brought anything to light but sadly they all proved just as tricky to track down after the 1871 census, so I abandoned the idea - a daughter Ann Selina Dodwell appeared to change her name to Annie Beatrice (and her age) and looks like she "ran off" with a William Kemp - got my self in knots and the father appears to have disappeared too!
thanks again for posting and any snippets on Reuben Henry Plimmer (or however he calls himself) most welcome! 8) ;)

3 other possible off spring:
Maria Plimmer 1903 -1903 Lichfield, Staffordshire
Mary Ann Plimmer 1905 - 1905 Lichfield, Staffordshire
Eva Plimmer 1906 - ? Lichfield, Staffordshire
before Maria or Ann Maria Plimmer died aged 33 in Lichfield, Staffordshire in 1909
-
found an online tree that states Eva Plimmer became Eva Brimham
she married Thomas Boston in 1929 and died as Eva May Boston in 1979
find Robert Brimham married Maria Plimmer in York in 1908
1911 finds Brimham clan at 24 George Lane, Lichfield
phew! ;)

1901 Reuben living Aston charged with aggravated assault against his wife living Lichfield with her mother. She said he'd "ill-used her" several times before.Reuben failed to appear.
1909 describing himself as a commission agent tried at Warwick Assizes for uttering counterfeit 5s. pieces.
Maria had a few run-ins as well.
Drunkeness, sleeping rough ,absconding from the workhouse & 2 counts of improper conduct.
Here's an interesting census entry from 1891:

Abebetar Plimmer 40/M/Wolverhampton/Beer stores manageress ( King's Arms Gt. Colmore St. )

Cathy
Has to be him as there's not another Reuben Plimmer b. 1868 B'ham. In fact there isn't another full stop.
-
thanks for all those extras - fleshing out a much more detailed story now
tried ancestry for army records but nothing matches (don't know how records differ from those on FindMyPast)
Marriages Dec 1886
PLIMMER Bilhah Birmingham 6d 221
Yale Thomas Birmingham 6d 221
I wish they'd make up their minds what name they were using lol
::)
-
no I surrender (lol) I can't find him in 1871 or 1891
if he was in an institution and only with an initial and goodness knows what surname, I don't think I'll find him if he was on the run either, especially if he didn't want to be found lol :-[
???
-
He & his brother were probably farmed out while Bella visited the Dodwells in 1871.
If you can coax his army records out of Cathy that should just about do it.
-
Hi Plimmerian ,
Was nt 100% sure it was your Reuben, mothers name etc, butquite an uncommon name.
If it was then he was abroad in 1891.

Hi
I came across this post whilst researching the name Abilla Plimmer (as it is so unusual) as they were listed as a 'visitor' living with my relatives when researching my family tree.
Annie Beatrice isnt Ann Selina .... Annie Beatrice was my Great grandmother. She is the daughter of Emmaline Ward (Nee Dodwell) who was sister to Ann Selina, daughter of Reuben and Louisa.
Hope this helps with your search :)
-
hello
thanks for posting
it's odd ancestry has this birth entry (my friend thought it was Bilhah, but I don't think it is):
Name B? Horton
Registration Year 1846
Registration Quarter Apr-May-Jun
Registration district Walsall
Parishes for this Registration District Walsall
Inferred County Staffordshire
Volume 17
Page 282
(The new GRO search engine shows (male) Butler Horton for this entry- oh well keep searching!)
Isabella (or) Bilhah (or) Bella (Horton (or) Plimmer) (later Yale):
daughter of Mary Ann Horton (later Plimmer)
wife of Thomas Yale
mother of:
William Reuban Henry Dodwell Plimmer (Joiner)
William Henry (or) Billy Plimmer (the boxer)
George Frederick Plimmer (Boot & Shoe Repairer)
John (or) Jack Plimmer (another boxer)
Louisa Plimmer (later Rudge)
I still have not found her entry in the 1881 census as yet.
1851 as Abbah Hoston
1861 as Billiak Plummer
1871 as Abilla Plimmer
1881 as ?
1891 as Abebetar Plimmer
1901 as Bella Plimmer
1911 as Bella Gale
(per ancestry)
so confusing :o
