Title: Holmes family in IOM
Post by: John M Holmes on Thursday 03 October 13 07:17 BST (UK)
I am trying to trace the family of John Holmes Born: 1810 in Kendal, UK. died: 28 Oct 1886 in Douglas, IOM & wife Agnes Dobson Born: 1818 in Stavely, Westmoreland, UK. Died: 23 Jul 1909 in Douglas, IOM.
Also Horatio Nelson Holmes 1855 - 1944 (Douglas, IOM) & wife Martha Jane Connor (1857 Ireland - 1934 Douglas, IOM.
Their children Esther and Agnes Holmes who were members of the Douglas Choral So. and were featured in plays.
Martha also had two children that died, but I have no idea when or their names.

Horatio was my GG Grandfather. His son Horatio (Horace) 1896 - 1976) was a regular visitor to the IOM.

The Holmes family were Organ (Carnival mostly) Builders.

Any information or photos of the above people or the cast of the DCS would be wonderful.

Cheers for now........John

there was a bit on this family on http://www.isle-of-man.com/genealogy/messageboard/index.pl/md/index/ tho you may need to use google to find the several postings but until Manx Telecom fix the broken search you need to follow Sue's direction - Try writing: Isleofman.com messageboard (2 words) plus the words you want to find in a Google search.

I find this is often better than the Search facility on the board, except for not being able to answer the message of course. However if/when the Search facility is working you can use several words from the Google archived message to find the correct message in the board archives.

I have a photo of Henry + organ pipes

Hi Frances,
Thanks for that. Actually the info you are talking about on the IOM Message Board was probably me amongst others.
Could you send a copy of Henry & the organ pipes to me by email........(*)
I have a photo of a person standing next to a small organ and I have identified him (I think) as Horatio Nelson Holmes...my GG Grandfather. I don't know if there was any writing on the back of the photo to contradict this.

I was in the IOM in May this year (2013) and it was my 2nd visit.

Cheers again and keep in contact...............John

if the organ looks rather like a collection of alpen horns with bell ends facing viewer then suspect same photo as I had it from a relative and sent it to some one in Australia - think Manx Museum also got a copy.

Hi Frances,

Yep! It's the photo that you sent to me in Australia...I thought you had discovered another one!

I identified the person as Horatio Nelson Holmes from looking at a few similar photos of him, but do you have information to say this is not so?

As all of the father's and son's were eventually "Organ Builders" it is difficult to tell one from the other!

It was also me that is on the Manx info board (The one we were in contact with) but recently when I tried to access the site it didn't function, so I came to this one. I believe they are trying to rectify the problems with the site.

I hope you are well and successful

Cheers for now.......John

In the 1911 IOM Census my Great Gradmother (Martha Holmes - Nee: Connor B: 1857, D: 1934) Stated that she had two children deceased at the time. I have an Alice Holmes Dec 1889 and a William Holmes 1889, both born and died on Dec 1889 - Age 0
I also have a Thomas E. D: 1890, and an Annie D: 1905
The Information on record for death/burial is this:
Alice Holmes 18 Dec 1889 Douglas Vol: A1 Page: 562
William Holmes 1889 Douglas Vol: A1 Page: 549
Thomas E. Holmes 1890 Douglas Vol: A1 Page: 598
Annie Holmes 1905 Douglas Vol: A Page: 1281

Birth: Alice Holmes Dec 1889 Douglas Vol: A2 Page: 808

Is there any way of accessing these records to establishing their parents, as I am living in Australia?

Father: Horatio Holmes - Mother: Martha (Connor) Holmes

www.imuseum.im might help - the refs you give are to civil registration books - not online you have to buy certs from General registry (expensive + they also charge a search fee unless you quote the exact ref - www.manxbmd.com might help
The Manx gen board you mention above is now working after its short term problems

Thanks Frances. I will eventually buy the certificates but I wanted to be sure they are the right people before the purchase..would the imuseum do that for me?
