The Ayr Arms Hotel used to be run by a friend of my father called Matthew Dickie. He used to entice the customers to leave at closing time by standing at the door with a box of Black Sobranie cigarettes which he gave to anyone who wanted one as they left. It was across the High Street from the Tam o' Shanter

I believe the pub in Kyle St was named in memory of Mattha, the Ayr Arms hotel was always known in the town as Mattha Dickies.

In 1861 there was a "Duncan's" and a "Faulds" on High Street according to an old newspaper cutting. Don't know when they closed down though.

Does anyone remember who owned the Royal Ayr Hotel back in the 1980s please? or where I can find out?

The valuation roll would tell you that. There are some online, but not from the 1980s. You would need to ask the library in Ayr, who are likely to have copies.

Thank you very much for your quick response and advice. I will try and email the library and hope that they can help me.
