Title: COWIE/SIMPSON/GEDDES/BAIKIE BUCKIE FAMILIES.
Post by: harington59 on Tuesday 08 October 13 13:49 BST (UK)
COWIE FAMILY OF BUCKIE/PORTSOY ETC.,

I am trying to trace my relatives on my maternal side and wondering if anyone can fill in any missing details with regards to d.o.b. and other family members. There are just so many Cowies!!

1.   I have a Death Certificate dated 1881 in the name of Janet Cowie and dated 25.10.1881 who was married to William Cowie. Janet was aged 75 yrs at time of registration. Janet’s parents were Alexander Thomson (deceased) and Catherine Thomson (deceased).  Catherine Maiden name was Cowie.
2.   My grandmother was Jeannie Reid (Cowie) who married William Simpson on 16.12.1910
In Portessie. She was 24 yrs and gave her address as 19, Sea View Road, Buckie. They later lived at ‘Earndale’ in Chancellor Road, Buckie which was built for them by his/her grandfather. Jeannie’s parents were James Reid and his wife Jeannie Cowie who’se parents were Alexander Cowie (1831?) and Jane Murray. Alexander’s parents were William Cowie (Codlen) born 1813 and his wife was Janet Thomson (1806-1881). Janet Thomson’s parents were Alexander Thomson (1780 - ) and Catherine Cowie (1780 -).
Jane Murray’s parents were George Murray and Helen Murray.

3.   My grandfather was (as above) was William Simspon who’se parents were William    Simpson (1843-1925) and J. Geddes (Foskie) (1848-1916). William’s parents were James David Simpson (1806-1893) and Jane Farquar (1819-1890). James David Simpson’s parents were Andrew Simpson and Jane Murray. Jane Farquar’s parents were William Farquar and Jane Baikie.

I know that all of the above is a bit of a ‘mouthful’ but if anyone can help with any information relative to dates of birth/death and any other information that you have I’d be obliged.

Alister,
Your info is a bit difficult to follow, therefore, I have started with your grandmother's parents beginning with the first census after their marriage

1881:Bracheads, Buckie
James Reid     26 Fisherman
Jane Reid     25 Wife
William Reid  3 Son
*Maggie J Reid 11 Mo. Dau
Jane Innes   17 Servant

(* daughter Maggie born 1880 does not appear on any further census returns. Poss infant death)

1891: 19 Seaview Road, Buckie
James Reid   36  Fisherman. Born Buckie
Jane Reid      35 Wife. Born Buckie
William Reid 13 Son. Born Buckie
Jessie Reid       8 Dau. Born Buckie
Jeanie Reid    5 Dau. Born Buckie
James Reid       2 Son. Born Buckie

1901: 19 Seaview Road, Buckie.
Jane C Reid 45 Fisherman's wife
Jessie Reid   18 Dau. Domestic Servant
Jane Reid   15 Dau. Domestic Servant ( Census has her mistranscribed as age5)
James Reid    12 Son. Scholar

Can you confirm that James Reid ( husband of Jane Cowie) was the son of William Reid and Margaret Murray?

Hi Anne,

Thanks for your prompt help - yes, William Reid was the wife of Margaret Murray - she
was shown as 'deceased' on the Marriage Certificate (3/11/1876) of their son James Reid and Jane Cowie. I've still got a lot of work to do so thanks for your help.

Just last week I found my grandmother (father's side) who went to Canada in 1920 - took me
two years to find out what happened to her and now have all details - quite satisfying.!!

Regards,

Alister
