Looking for a Mary Ann smith born in 1853 in Alveley Shropshire any information about her and parents would be great ful. She went on to marry Richard childs but she died in 1887. Thanks for your help
-
Oh dear Smith name not good! You might need to get the marriage certificate to give fathers name and occupation for something to go on :)
Having said that I can't see a marriage to Richard Childs, presume before 1881. Closest is Ludlow 1873 but that's Mary Ann Edwards as one of the brides not Smith :-\
-
Do u have any details on that marriage at all
-
Only this marriage entry from BMD index.
Jun 1873 Ludlow 6a 1167
Thomas Burton
Richard Childs
Mary Ann Edwards
Emma Sherwood
Is it possible your Mary Ann was married before or was she too young?
-
there's a Mary Ann Edwards the right age born in Alveley, living in Upper Arley, Staffs in 1861

Seems to fit doesn't it. How sure are you about the Smith name wiilams83?
-
May 1885 hold gate Ludlow Richard child's born parents on birth certificate is Richard child farm lab and mother is Mary Ann smith. X mark of Richard childs father
-
Died before 1901 as not on cenus record so she died in 1887
-
Oh right so Smith it was then. In that case the marriage can't be theirs (maybe they never married) or maybe her father died and mother remarried a Smith and she called herself Smith.
Or the marriage entry is misspelt and we haven't found it yet!

I see so we've tried this one previous and not found a Mary Ann Smith only the same Mary Ann Edwards marriage. Sorry we can't solve the Smith part for you.
Is Richard born 1885 the only birth certificate you have? I wonder if they all say mother is Smith.
-
Yes I think I need to order another cerficate to found out
-
that's a good idea Millypede I was wondering if Mary Anne, when asked for the maiden name, gave her own mother's maiden name by mistake, there are a few female Smiths marrying male Edwards around there at the right time
-
Going to order Mary Jane child's Beth I think who was sister to Richard child's born in 1875 I know she was married in 1897 as well
-
Thanks for the advice and I'm sure Mary Ann Edwards and Richards marriage is my family but will collect Mary Janes marriage and birth from 1875

I wonder if Ann was a Smith before she married John Edwards and the children have taken his surname name of Edwards

I don't think that's going to help is it ??? Mary Jane being daughter of Mary Ann so Beth would be her granddaughter. Her birth won't have Grannies name on it.
-
Mary Jane childs born in 1875 is the brother to Richard child's born in 1885
-
Yes I understand that but getting her daughter's birth certificate is going to show mother as Mary Jane whatever her married name was nee Childs not Mary Ann Childs nee Smith or Edwards.
Does that make sense? I might have misunderstood something.
-
Yes I understand

Yes Margp you got it
-
Yes I got that MargP. The new reference to someone called Beth was confusing plus not having the surname spelt with a capital letter (sorry to be picky!) makes it hard to follow especially with a name like childs.
-
Thank you for your help Milliepede and MargP for your help. I'm going to order the brothers and sisters of Richard childs b 1885. Mary Jane and John
-
Good luck wiilams83. Come back when you get them and let us know if you need any further help.

Hi William, I think you may have to get this marriage to make sure, I would try for the original one from Shropshire, the GRO are prone to errors, as the original one copied into a register, and each Quarter they are copied again and sent to the GRO
-
Yes I think I am going to have to get the marriage like you said before in 1873 and Richard was born in 1848 in Ludlow MargP
