Title: John COCK arrived Adelaide, SA on Buffalo 1836 ? siblings.
Post by: Briar Rosie on Monday 14 October 13 03:19 BST (UK)
Robert COCK arrived in SA with his wife and family in 1836. By 1841 he was leasing land at Balhannah in the Adelaide hills alongside a William & Alexander Cock. Were they related? Robert was nominated 'grantee' on his brother William's will in 1854 in Adelaide. There are many references to Robert Cock being born 25 May 1801 in Dysart, Fife, Scotland but I suspect they all devolve to the one source. I have searched both Family Search and Scotlandspeople and can find no trace of any of these family members in the Fife BMD records. William Owen and his wife Christina Cock arrived in Adelaide on the Rajasthan in 1838 from Fife. William Owen chartered ships and traded between Adelaide and Mauritius, a William Cock was often captain on these voyages and is identified as his brother-in-law. William Owen and Christina had 3 daughters the last of whom was named Christina Williamson Owen. Help! I would like to establish what relationship existed between these people. Robert Cocks son stood as a member for parliament in Victoria and William Owen in South Australia.

Thanks for picking that up Cando. Robert Cock is the man I'm after. Particularly if he has a relationship to Christina, married to William Owen. There is quite a lot of information on both their lives after arrival in Adelaide but I'm stumped with connecting them back to Fife, Scotland. Too early for them to have been listed in any Scottish census i'm afraid.

Robert's life is well documented on various sources and I would suggest broadening your search for his baptism. Dinn, Fife may have been their place of residence taken from the emigration documents, and may not have been his place of birth.

Now after some more searching.

His obituary says native of Fife.  Wouldn't the information for an obituary have come from his family?

You would think so Cando. I have searched for Robert, William, Alexander and Christina Cock (Cocks, Cox, & Coxs) not just under Fife but all of Scotland. No luck.  Family search seems to indicate the records for 1800 - 1825 for Fyfe are complete (if the were indeed christened). I picked up a whisper of his mother's MS being Williamson which is why I included the name of Christina's daughter in my original post. Unfortunately I didn't make a note of that source at the time - silly me!

BISA mentions that Robert's father was James.   I have also been frustrated by a number of missing parish records for my ancestors in Scotland but they were not from Fife.

As you mention, they may not have been baptised.

I notice that Robert and Catherine had dau Ann baptised at Portland, Vic in 1853 but the parish record will not give any further info.

Looking at the ages of the children I wonder if this was possibly a second marriage for Robert.

James baptism is on familysearch and there is a six year gap between dau Nancy and James.

Curiouser and curiouser. Ann Cock was certainly baptised 1853 in Portland, Victoria but unfortunately she was born in South Australia 10 Dec 1846 according to the baptismal record so she doesn't have all the delicious details I was expecting, never mind. I'll keep working on it.

Did you download the record from Vic BDM?

If so, you would not find any parental details.  Now if it had been a birth registration that would have been a wonderful source of info although from Portland in 1853 may have had limited info anyway...before civil reg.
