Title: Queenborough lookup request: surname Clout
Post by: mde176 on Wednesday 16 October 13 13:46 BST (UK)
I'm trying to identify a Thomas Clout or Cloud who, according to the later censuses, was born in Sheerness, Kent c. 1816-1818. He moved to London, where he married at St Mary Newington on 29 March 1837, and lived in Lambeth where most of his children were born.

One of the witnesses to his marriage was a Sarah Ann Clout, and was almost certainly the Sarah Ann Clout bp. 2 Mar 1812 in Queenborough, d/o John Clout, a brewer, and his wife Sarah (Sarah Ann also married in Lambeth in 1841). I suspect she may have been Thomas's sister, but the IGI does not show John and Sarah having a son Thomas baptised in Queenboro' (or elsewhere).

Any information about members of the Clout family in Queenborough/Sheerness around the beginning of the 19th C would be much appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Only three CLOUT baptisms in Queenborough (nothing for CLOUD)

Two with parents John & Sarah:
1808 12th June.  Frances, born Apr 9th
1812 1st March. Sarah Ann, born 19th Sept
The other baptism is for Mary Ann 1809 28th July, born 18th June, no parents given.

Hi,

Thank you both for the lookups. The three baptisms Betty mentions are on the IGI.

The fact that Frances also married at St Mary Newington, and that Sarah Ann was a witness at that marriage too (and her father), makes me all the more hopeful that Thomas is their brother. Need some evidence, though...

Unfortunately his marriage, being before the register change in the latter part of 1837, doesn't include his father's name. Why couldn't he have waited a few months?

Any ideas where else I could look?

Here's a parish list for Kent but no OPC for Sheerness  ???

Not that this will help with baptism for Thomas but just in case others' are looking have I got the
correct children for Thomas & Sarah and was his occupation a Hatter?

Eliza Sarah 1838
Sarah 1840
Thomas 1844
Selina 1846
Emma 1848
Maria 1851
John 1859

Another little thing: it's definitely the same Sarah Ann Clout who was witness to her sister Frances's marriage in 1829 and to Thomas's marriage in 1837, both at St Mary Newington, and the same Sarah Ann who married James Woodgate in 1841 at St John the Evangelist in Lambeth (which was also where Thomas's daughters Eliza and Sarah were baptised in 1837 and 1840). Same signature on all three marriage register entries.

It's one of those cases where it's so tempting to jump to a conclusion, and I always beware of those!

Do you know if there are any gaps in the Queenborough parish register or the transcription of it?

There is no OPC for Queenborough/Sheerness/Sheppey but you may find something on Colin Penney's website

Queenborough parish registers are on Findmypast (indexed too).  Sheerness wasn't a parish in it's own right until much later (it came under Minster) though there was a non-conformist church (see Colin Penney's site as given by Bearkat above for details).

Hi, My name is Emma Cloud, The Thomas Cloud you search for is my 3rd Great Grandfather. Have you got any further back?
I too have found that he is son of Thomas Cloud and Sarah Atterbury married in March 1937.
