Samuel Harrison married Mary Selby 23rd August. 1870 he was 23 years old it says his profession is a joiner, I want to find his parents on the marriage certificate it says his father Samuel Harrison deceased profession toll keeper. Thank you. ;D
-
Hi I found Samuel (and wife Eliza on the 1851 census) as a 'Plush weaver', his son James was a 'Toll Collector'.
Possibly Samuel Snr's 2nd marriage as there is a gap between James age 17 and the next child Emma age 6 yrs. Samuel Jnr was 2 yrs old. So I would say Eliza was Emma & Samuel's mother
Hope this helps

Shirley

I couldn't find one.I did look for James b. c.1834 to a Samuel & found one in Denton just on the other side of the lake to Droylsden, mother Priscilla. That's all I could find except for a death for a Priscilla Harrison Denton 1873 so probably not her.
-
Hi again
1841 Census at Droylsden
Samuel 35 a weaver
Elizabeth 30
William 13
James 3
Mary ? Mnths
...........
Marriage record 1837
Eliza BAGULEY to
Samuel a Weaver, his father Daniel a Weaver.
......
There is a marriage in 1815 to an Elizabeth ASTLEY, but surely Samuel would have been too young?
............
Looked for baptism of James - no luck

Hello everyone I think I am following the wrong Samuel Harrison. I was looking for the father of Samuel Harrison born 1875 I think his marriage certificate from 1902 says he is 27 he marries Bertha Gorman age 19 his profession is greengrocer it says his farther is Samuel Harrison deceased profession collier, I have found a baptism for Samuel born in 1875 Mother Alice no father can anyone please help very confused, that's why I think the Samuel who married Mary Selby is the wrong one.
-
Hello it's me again, I have now found the right Samuel Harrison1875.
after finding his war records, it told you what parish he was born in St Michael's ward the baptism said mother Mary Harrison.
I sent for birth certificate it said mother Mary Harrison no father so did he lie on his marriage certificate about having a father ? Where did his Mum get the name Harrison? I found him on the 1901 census with 2 sisters and a Mary Sheeky Mother? It's definitely him, can anyone help please cannot find him before 1901 on any census .
-
Where is St. Michael's ward ?
What's the 1901 ref. no. ?
What's his Regt. & service no. ?
-
St Michael's ward is Ashton under lyne. The 1901 census ref number is RG13/3795 His regiment was the Lancashire fusiliers short service but it says he was in the 4Th battalion Manchester regiment for 6 years his reg number is 5555, i know this is defiantly him because its got his wife Bertha gorman on and his children.
-
There are two marriages on Cheshire Bmd For Alice.
Alice Harrison and Samuel Rowland in 1879 at St Michael Ashton under Lyne.
And a marriage, showing both surnames of Harrison and Rowland to John Sheekey at Holy Trinity Ashton under Lyne 1895
Which would explain the absence of a father's name for Samuel if he was born 1875
There is a possible birth reg on Cheshire Bmd for a Samuel Harrison 1875 Mother's maiden name Harrison.
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk
-
The ref. no. is RG13; Piece: 3795; Folio: 92; Page: 28
His mother is named as Alice Sheakie ? not Mary.
Is this correct ?
This is that family in 1881:
RG11; Piece: 4051; Folio: 70; Page: 37
This particular Samuel appears to be the illegitimate son of Alice & has taken the name Rowland after Alice's marriage.
-
And if the Rowland marriage is correct and Samuel is using that surname then I think the 1891 shows him an inmate at Manchester and Salford Boys and Girls Refuges and Homes
RG12; Piece: 3266; Folio: 51; Page: 6;
-
His mother Alice is a widow in 1891 and with her on this census are her daughters Ann J and Emily
RG12 Piece 3275 Folio 69 Page 10
-
sorry it is Alice not Mary ,on the 1901 census it has got Alfred rowland 9 months old Ann Jane and Emily are down has Harrison ?
-
i have got Samuel's birth certificate he was born 22ND may 1875 mother Alice Harrison no father address 1 Pitt st
-
on his marriage to Bertha gorman he is samuel Harrison it says father samuel Harrison deceased collier but he must have lied about having a father if that is the case .
-
sorry it is Alice not Mary ,on the 1901 census it has got Alfred rowland 9 months old Ann Jane and Emily are down has Harrison ?
Both girls are Rowlands so probably just a mistake :)
Ann Jane's birth was registered Ashton Town Tameside in 1883 Mother's maiden name Harrison
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk.
Emily's baptism is on Family Search
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FMB1-Q51
if you click on the camera to the right of the record you will be able to view the image.
-
on his marriage to Bertha gorman he is samuel Harrison it says father samuel Harrison deceased collier but he must have lied about having a father if that is the case .
It's possible that he regarded Samuel Rowland as his father and so used his name on the marriage cert, perhaps to save face :)
-
It says his father is Samuel Harrison on his marriage cert .did both Alice husbands pass away
-
1901 census shows Alice as being married but John isn't with her.
I haven't spotted him anywhere yet in 1901 but I have found a possible death record on Cheshire Bmd
John Sheekey died aged 51 1907 Ashton Town Tameside AST/137/40
-
and a possible death record for Samuel Rowland on Freebmd.
March Qtr 1886 Manchester aged 43 8d 183
http://www.freebmd.org.uk
This would tie in with his age of 38 on the 1881 census.
-
On the 1901 census where Samuel is on with his mother and sisters there is a Alfred Rowland it says nephew? I wonder if he was one of the sisters ?
-
It looks on the face of it that Alfred is the son of Ann Jane Rowland.
-
On the Cheshire bmd it has him has John Alfred Rowland ? mothers maiden name Rowland. Also a death or him 1905 age 5 would his be him?
-
I would say it probably is him.
Registered March 1906 not 5
-
Sorry yes 1906 :) thank you for your help everyone it has been very complicated family line to follow. I am going to try get the marriage certificates so I can try follow Alice Harrison/Rowland /sheeky. Fathers line it says he is Henry Harrison, cannot find a birth for her yet but will try, thank you again. 😊

A possible for Alice in 1861: Dukinfield Ashton under Lyne:

Ann Harrison 38
Alice Harrison 6 b.Manchester (as per 1901 census)
Selina Harrison 3
Mary A Harrison 4
Rachael Howard 35 lodger
Hannah Taylor 42 lodger
Mathew Hague 37 lodger
Same family in 1871 Ashton under Lyne:

Can anyone find death for Henry Hunt Harrison
-
There's this one:
Jun 1887
Harrison Henry 67 Ashton 8d 368
Right age.
Not him as Ann Harrison remarried to a James Rigby in 1875.
1881:
RG11; Piece: 4051; Folio: 75; Page
The only other one is this:
Sept. 1863
HARRISON Henry Ashton 8d 327
The anomaly is that in 1871 Ann is listed as married but head & is listed as having a 3 yo daughter Susannah.
This gives the impression he's left & died somewhere else.
or
He's dead by 1868 & Susannah is the illegitimate daughter of Ann.
-
Funny thing yesterday I went to the Archives centre where the marriages of Holy Trinity church are held, while looking through them I saw this marriage, Susanah Harrison 5th April 1890 marries David Hughes address 68 Brook St. father Henry Harrison weaver?
-
Just found the marriage Ann Flint/Harrison James Rigby 1875 St Michael church Ashton under lyne
-
