Title: Ellen Brownrigg poss. b. Dover 1861-2
Post by: JohninSussex on Friday 25 October 13 07:43 BST (UK)
I wonder if anyone has any ideas.  The 1881 census shows my relative Anne E Castle (née Rutter) in Dover with a daughter, nephew and "Ellen Brownrigg, 19, general servant b. Dover".

The trouble is I can find no Brownriggs living in/near Dover around 1861, no Ellen Brownrigg born anywhere on England, etc.  I would like to know who her parents were and if she might actually be another relative working for the family.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi John
Taking into consideration that the enumerator got the spelling wrong there is a Ellen Ann BROWNING born in Dover March quarter 1861 according to free BMD.
This may well be her.

OK thanks both of you, that is the most likely answer.  I did try looking on FreeBMD at one stage for Brown* but there were so many plain Browns I must have missed this one.

So she's just a regular kinda servant girl then...  and probably Mrs Castle had recently forgotten poor Ellen's 20th birthday.
