Title: FamilySearch ebooks won't download
Post by: Gen List Lass on Thursday 31 October 13 19:40 GMT (UK)
I've found some parish registers on the FamilySearch ebooks site but they won't download even if I sign in to FS.

Anyone know the secret?

Hi Gen

Do you have to be in a FamilySearch centre to access them?

Brian

Here is a link to FS books

https://books.familysearch.org/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?dscnt=1&dstmp=1383294277755&vid=FHD_PUBLIC&fromLogin=true

I typed "Northumberland" into the search box and came up with lots of hits. Scrolling to the bottom of the first page I clicked on parish registers of Long Haughton

it stops downloading after "Ex Libris Rosetta        The registers of Long Houghton, in the county of Northumberland : baptisms 1646-...  "
then a symbol for "details" and a "share" button. Checked the details but found them no help.

I've tried this with both Firefox and Adobe with no success.

I've searched FamilySearch wiki FAQ and the FS help centre but only found this on https://familysearch.org/ask/productSupport    I typed in book download in the search box and got a drop down menu which just led me through the steps I had already tried.... back to square one

Gaie - nothing was mentioned about being in a FS centre to download these books, I think the whole idea behind this resource is that people can use it world-wide.

It's such a disappointment not to be able to download these books, a great resource if available!

Hi Gen

Thanks for the link; I see what you mean.  I'm using Google Chrome, by the way.

If this can't be solved I can ask in the FS centre next time I'm there.  There are lots of registers on the FS site that can only be viewed in a centre or as a signed-in member of a supporting organization, but at least the screen tells you that!  ::)

Looking on the main site the parish images for Long Houghton are included but can only be viewed as stated above  :-\

So near yet so far away....

Do you want to post names and dates?

I have just downloaded o'k the full transcript.
I didn't have any problems, what kind of internet connection do you have?
I use a wired broadband connection with no limits on upload/download.

Brian

I've just tried again with Firefox, as I usually use Chrome. no good either.

I've had no problem downloading large Google books in the past so don't know what the problem can be. I've got unlimited download on a wifi connection but wired upstairs on the desktop.

Gaie

I went to Woodhorn today and looked at the original Long Houghton registers...it would have been handy to be able to look at the FS version before I went. If you can ask at the FS Centre about this problem I would be grateful.

I still can't view them either - Brian's got the touch!  ;D

I will ask.

Gaie

Added: unlimited broadband here as well

Hi,   I might be misunderstanding what it is you want to do here but have you tried accessing the Longhaughton Parish Records on Familysearch this way?

[Now what!, never used before]- cancel that message.
Just sent a personal message with a link to my dropbox folder. 8)

Dropbox has it! Many thanks, it's now saved in my "Dowloaded genealogy books" file:-) That is the exact book that is in the Northumberland Archives reference library..... still pondering how Brian can do it but not Gaie or Gen ???

HL - those are the Bishop's Transcripts, very tedious to navigate although MUCH better than nothing sometimes!

Gen: Regarding your earlier supplied link for the Northumberland records, just had a look at what is held under the 'Yorkshire' heading.
Quite a few good evenings reading matter to look at.

Oh this looks like my "winter" reading is going to be quite full!

Thanks for the heads up on the ebooks :D

I found some indexes that would have taken me a very long time to sort through elsewhere!

hmmm... the ones that have a no entry icon can only be accessed in a familysearch center >:(

I only started exploring FamilySearch more thoroughly recently. Up till then I'd mostly used it for the IGI and Bishop's Transcripts.

Is there any way that this huge resource of scanned ebooks can be "pinned" on a resource list by a Moderator? Seems a pity only those who stumble over it, get to use it. Or is it already up there?

A quick word of caution though, depending on the speed of the connecting link to your computer the time it takes to download a full document can take quite a long time.
Just downloaded a 400page document and with my download speed of 60Mb/sec it still took all of 4 minutes.

Brian - still much quicker (and cheaper) than
going to the archives library
buying it on eBay
visiting the British Library or Salt Lake City    ;D

What could have prevented you/anybody downloading the files also is 'the connection timing out'?
[I am thinking that if no data is read within a given time period, the connection stops]

some ebooks (using Chrome) didn't load for me, then I discovered that they had not had their cert's passed by Microsoft or maybe google?  In the address bar on the far right hand side there is an extra symbol which if you click on it, you can say "accept".  The document will then load.

Most of the ebooks took about 30 secs to download

Sorry my post was so useless earlier. I had a feeling it would be.

However, I haven't found the books on familysearch before and since I have a lot of ancestors from Northumberland and Durham please can you tell me what the advantage of these books is? Are any of them Parish Records?

I can't seem to download them either but I do spend time trawling through the images on familysearch and so am intrigued by these books.

Sorry Hampshire Lass, your post wasn't useless at all, many who have never used FS databases would find it helpful.

It's just this thread is about FS making available the digitallly scanned books and some parish records for download, which makes it so much easier to look through without causing access havock for FS.  Its certainly worth having a good rummage through and see what you can find.
Title: Re: FamilySearch ebooks won't download
Post by: Hampshire Lass on Saturday 02 November 13 16:59 GMT (UK)
Thanks jc26red I will have a rummage. I did find one which may have been useful but something went wrong when I went to view it, so I'll read and digest the posts on this thread and perhaps that will solve things for me.

Hampshire Lass: After clicking onto the link, input your search term then see what is available.
Once you have decided which book interests you click onto the icon to the right of printer icon. Download icon is square box with a downward arrow, when download complete (in my case I have an option to save/read using Adobe Reader). (simple)  8)

Hi gen,

When that happens, look on the address bar at the top where you see the url address..... Right over on the righthand side of the bar will be two icons. A star which you can click to add to favorites and just to the left of it is another icon... I think it was a shield, can't remember off-hand. Click on this icon and it will say the page has not passed certification and gives you the option to accept it anyway. Click accept then the page will begin to load properly. It takes a little while but it will load.

Right then I am using firefox: After clicking onto the book I can see a movable 'white line' which is indicating data downloaded. Initially moves slowly, to right and above I see a printer icon then download icon followed by current view icon.
Clicking onto the download icon the speed of 'white line' goes into overdrive!

When I went to download it I found the "save" button and it started to save and there was a moveable blue line indicating it was downloading.....but it took such a veeeery looong tiiime.....I cancelled it  >:(

Thanks Calverley Lad, I was just browsing but I might take you up on the offer when I find something of real interest :-)

Very frustrating.  I'd really like to gain access and wonder what I'm doing wrong.  It takes me to a log in screen for exLibris Rosetta and tells me:

"You do not have sufficient rights to view requested object.  Login in order to view object".

Are the records I'm trying to access only available to specific subscribers such as Libraries?

One of the records I tried to access was the Parish Registers for North Meols, Lancashire.

BTW - Many thanks to Gen List Lass for highlighting these ebooks.

Kit: I have just done as I have done since original post, entered North Meols, Lancashire then clicked onto search.
Brings up a long list of books, so can't see where your going wrong?
 Brian
[Correction, I get the same message when I tried to download the 'registers for North Meols' The books 1/2 are both listed as protected]

Well, I downloaded Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free program) and then was able to download the Long Houghton Parish Register with no problems at all.

I am trying to view Fleenor:descendants of Michael Fleenor and when I click on it I get this message, "You do not have sufficient rights to view requested object.  Access Denied"  I can view other digital books just fine.  When I go to details I get this:
Title:
Fleenor : descendents of Michael Fleenor
Language: English;English;English
Provenance: Owning Institution:Genealogical Society of Utah d.b.a FamilySearch; http://www.familysearch.org/
Patron Usage Instructions: https://www.familysearch.org/terms; Protected

Where it says protected on the Patron Usage Instructions does that mean that it has to be accessed at a Family History library?
Thanks for any help-
