Hi,
My mother and my aunt has started their own research and I thought I'd do a bit of internet researching cos they are hopeless with computers.
My family history runs through the cunliffe line. They stayed at Blackrod... near Chorley? Well, we are connected to that place and there is a church there. The Cunliffes worked in the mines. My mother told me that she has an old photo (I've not seen it yet) of James or Jimmy Cunliffe who had 10 children and that he is the spitting image of me.
I know that there is a George Cunliffe at Blackrod but I'm not sure if I am related to him.
We do have a confession letter from my mother's great great great grandfather that discloses details of a love affair that has been kept secret in the family, between the Duke of Norfolk (a bastard child), son of Katherine Howard, and with someone from the Cunliffe family.
So the Cunliffes are related to the Howards through Katherine Howard.
That's as far back as we can all trace it.
But the family history from Blackrod is patchy.
Does anyone know of any info?
Thanks.

That is a lot of info. I've passed this info onto my mum and she has asked me whether you knew anything of the Cunliffe Stately Home in Wycolar, Chorley?
-
That is a new one on me. The same as the Howard connection. The thing is with the Cunliffes the name changed sometime in the 1800s the branch I am connected to came from Ashton in Makerfield. Where the name was Cundley if you look at the LOPC site it is all Cundley or Cundliffe there are very few Cunliffes then look at the Lancs BMD site there are very few Cundleys after 1837. This came up a few years ago when I was transcribing for the LOPC site. Ralph & Betty were both taken back from Blackrod to Ashton in Makerfield to be buried

Thanks for the lead Claire it is worth looking into

Hello. philhythe..My ancestor his George cunliffe born 1840 married Mary Alice Fishwick
I have been unable to find James's parents are you able to help please. And my father
told me the cunliffes are from Liverpool and owned ships. many thanks John Speak.
-
There was a Cunliffe shipping company in 18th century. Triangular Trade - slaves and tobacco. They also got contract to transport Jacobite prisoners after defeat of 1745 Jacobite Rising. I recall a tale about one such ship being attacked by French navy and prisoners freed. There was a ship named Cunliffe.

I think I can help we are certainly looking at the same people if you go to the Tribal Pages website I have a website on there https//cedric1523.tribalpages.com this should take you to a website called Lancashire meets Oxon & Bucks & contact me through there & I can pass on the password.
As far as I know my Cunliffes all came from Ashton-in Makerfield & Golborne area. A few years ago I transcribed for Lancashire On Line Parish Clerk site & we had a discussion on there & it looks like the name changed from Cundley to Cunliffe for some reason. If you look on the LOPC site before 1837 there are a lot of Cundley's then look at BMD's after 1837. The surname name virtually ceases to exist
& there a lots of Cunliffe's. As far as I can tell my tree is correct going back to about 1781. George died in 1918 in Chorley. Mary Ann four years earlier
-
I realise this is an old thread but during lockdown I've been researching and I too am related to the Blackrod/Chorley Cunliffes. I still live in NW England. My father was James 1926 - 2001. The tree from him is:
James 1890 - 1965
Henry 1868 - 1941
James 1845 - 1906
James 1804 - 1861 (died at Pilling Lane Chorley and was the manager of the Chorley Colliery for James Darlington Esq.)
The last James in the list (my 3 x great grandfather) has quite a significant monument in the Chorley Cemetry - see attachments
If anyone has any info. on this branch of Cunliffe's back from 1800 I'll be very interested. I suspect the father of James could be a Richard Cunliffe but I have a few question marks regarding this.
-
Welcome to RootsChat.
Did James, the colliery manager or any of his relatives leave a will?
-
It looks like James left a will in 1862 on Find My Past it has Chorley & wife Ann
-
Yes James left a will proved in Lancaster on the 27th January 1862 with effects under £200 with wife Ann, son Joseph & Innkeeper Thomas Jackson proved the will
