Quite some time ago my mother in law showed me a newspaper clipping, kept inside a WW1 soldiers bible. It related to a HOROBIN marriage in Lima, Peru. At that time I wasn't really interested in FH. That's all I know. How I so wish I had taken more interest - I know same old story.
Mother in law died and father in law, over the years, disposed of many things he considered rubbish. After his death the WW1 bible was found but no clipping. Can anyone come up with a HOROBIN marriage in Lima, Peru?
His mother was Lena HOROBIN and the bible belonged to her originally. The bible we have, and a second one my sister in law has, belonged to HOROBIN brothers.
The family tree is publicly available as SMITH/WATERHOUSE on Ancestry, or http://www.avalon-family-history.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ (http://www.avalon-family-history.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/)
This has also been posted in 'England-General'.
Any help appreciated - I know it's a long shot.

There was one in 1955-60: too recent?
-
Have you tried contactong Gwyneth Horobin ?
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~horobin/
she is very knowledgeable about many branches of the Horobin family
-
55-60 is certainly possible - details please.
Yes I have exchanged emails with Gwyneth - and several others, thanks for the suggestion.

Have sent a PM

Thanks for the PM.
That would be the correct HOROBIN, nice of my wife's grandmother.
Problem solved - now I wonder why she was in Peru?

She travelled out on the Reina Del Pacifico (in 1st Class) from Liverpool to Lobitos on 7 July 1955. She was a comptometer operator, intending to reside in Peru for 12 months or more.
-
excellent - that ties it up - I remember the place name 'Lobito' from the news paper article.
but findmypast outbound passenger list says Lobito, Angola, which is Africa not South America.
So how does Lobito, Angola connect to Lima, Peru?
Perhaps the journey was a 'triangle' like the slave trade routes:
UK - Africa - America

Interesting history of the ship at http://www.liverpoolships.org/reina_del_pacifico.html (http://www.liverpoolships.org/reina_del_pacifico.html)

FindMyPast is wrong. The ship was bound for Bermuda, Nassau, Kingston, Havana, Cartogena, St Christobal, Lobitos, La Libertad, Callao, Valparaiso etc.
-
Ah - I see
Lobito is Angola
Lobitos is Peru
According to the ships web page its regular run was to South America - so the 'findmypast' reference could be a transcription problem
Ah - you replied whilst I was typing
Allan

Yes it's a transcription error in their indexing

Magic - thanks for your help

After a visit back in England in 1957, they were off to Canada on the Carinthia on 22 May of that year.
-
great - thanks.
There's a death I thought might be her in Middlesbrough, 1968 age abt right but unless she came back from Canada I must be wrong.

William Horobin, her Uncle left Liverpool for Montreal in 1952, then after a return, again in 1956.
I wonder if they followed him.

Callao being the Port of Lima, Peru. Been to Lima a couple of times, in 2002 and 2007, whilst my son lived there and will be there next March on a South America cruise- 'round the Horn', Buenos Aires to Los Angeles.

Thanks for that confirmation
