Hi,
Helping a friend with her family tree and we are trying to find a birth in the Isle Of Man for Thomas Lawson COTTIER born abt 1843.
Hoping to be able to apply for a Certificate to find out who his parents are.
(Never searched for anyone in the Isle Of Man - so not sure where to look)
(We have him on Censuses, so those not needed Thanks - don't want to take up your time when we have them)
Many Thanks
Cancan :)

I think that compulsory registration of births and deaths in the Isle of Man did not start until 1878

www.imuseum.im has all + they often have additional info - there are no birth certs until 1877 on IoM except for a very very few who requested a civil reg post 1847

Francies mnb,
was it common to leave a baptism of a child until it was older, as in this one you have found
parents Thomas Cottier and Mary Lawson, married 22nd June , 1833, Braddan,
And the burial in Braddan ,of Mary Cottier, aged 28 years, 15th September 1848, can this death be looked up via iomfhs , to check for a will, its a long time since I have visited,

no - most still baptised within weeks (or days) of birth - usually the register will have a note that the child is older or it would be noted as a reception into congregation when there had been a private baptism - however it is possible that a parent or relation 'got' religion (esp following cholera scares etc) and had child baptised 'just in case' - possibly also required if was to attend a church linked school (day or Sunday).
there is an index to wills on www.iomfhs.im - however I don't see any will for Mary - wills/decrees become much less common as 19th C progressed unless property amd/or significant effects are involved

Thank you very much,
