Title: Spalling / Morrison
Post by: margaretspalling on Monday 18 November 13 13:12 GMT (UK)
Hey there everyone, I am just wondering if anyone could help me with these 2 surnames.  I am trying to work on my family tree and have the Spallings and Morrisons living in Ballindreen Scotch and also around Ballyversall.  Also in and around Bovagh and Blackhill areas of Aghadowey.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Margaret

WOW what can I say you are a star.  I knew about the children but didn't realise that they were baptised in Aghadowey.   Is there anywhere other than PRONI that I can view these records do you know.  THAT IS THEM I can't believe it.  Oh and then could you tell me the best place to look for their burial.  Do you think that it was in the same church.  Sorry for bombarding you with so many questions.  Do you have any info on John Spalling or anything else I could go on

Again thanks ever so much wooohooooo

1901 Census
Joseph Spalling & family (including his father John)- both shown as married but should perhaps should be widowed- John & children Church of Ireland but father Presbyterian:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Knockantern/Ballyversall/1519220

1911 Census
Isabella Spallin living in Carnaboy (near Coleraine) in 1911 with brothers Daniel & Samuel and younger sister Martha born Co.Antrim as well as a son- religion shown as Church of Ireland:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Ballylagan/Carnaboy/595422
Think this is brother John not far away-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Ballylagan/Killygreen_Upper/595555
Maybe sister Maggie here-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Knockantern/Lisnagalt/590425

None of the ages between 1901 to 1911 match up too well but all seems to be the family.

to be continued...

There's a baptism for Joseph in 1891 but can't see him in census. Suspect this is his death:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FT68-X3B
and Joseph's birth:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FB46-Z2J

Possible death for father Joseph (which would explain why I can't see him in 1911 either):
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTFG-C25

John's birth (baptism birthdates out by about a year?):
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBZ6-LZC

Have to go out for a bit but will post more records on Sandy Spallin's family, etc.

Thanks ever so much for all your info so far.  Thanks for taking the time out to look.

Dates I have are:

John Spalling                          born C.  1820     Died 1902     Age 82
Isabella Spalling (his wife)         born C. 1806

Joesph Spalling                      born C. 1846 Married 14 August 1879     Died 1905   Age 59
Martha Morrison (his wife)       born C. 1854  "         "     "          "         Died  1896  Age 42

Their Children

Margaret Spalling                                      born  7th February 1881        died 7th May 1961
Isabella Spalling                                        born 1882                            died 26th Sept 1939
Joseph Spalling                                         born 1883                            died 1900
Daniel Spalling (my Grandfather)                 born 1st January 1885           died 31st August 1970
Samuel Spalling and Sarah Spalling (twins)   born 1886 (can't find him anywhere after 1911 Census)
James Spalling                                          born 1894                            died 14th June 1973
Martha Spalling                                         born 1896  and this is the year that the mother Martha Morrison Spalling died so I am assuming (which I know is wrong) that she possibly died in childbirth and so daughter is named after the mother.

Does Cullycapple keep school records do you know?

Cullycapple School closed in June 2013 and the registers are in PRONI. However, when I get the kitchen table cleared later tonight I will start looking through the roll books (Sandy Spallin's family certainly attended the school). More on that family shortly.

Have gone back through online records and think I've found all your Spalling family- there are a few differences from the dates you posted earlier.

John Spalling (c1820?-1902) m. Isabella (c1806-1886)

Joseph Spalling (c1846-1905) m.(1879) Martha Morrison (c1854-1896).

         birth https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBD3-J2H
7.   John Spalling (1887)
        birth https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBZ6-LZC
8.   James Spalling (1892)

?9.   Martha Jane Spalling (1892)

I think the 'other' Spallin family in Aghadowey is connected (Bovagh and Mullaghinch are adjoining townlands). So, here's a family tree for them-

Alexander Spallin (c1861-Oct.1954) m.(1892) Sarah Wilson (c1866-cJan.1957).

Thanks ever so much for all that info.  Some of those I didn't know about so I reckon its down the road of applying for all the certificates and it's more info than I could ever get on my own  :P

So Can I ask you a silly question and  there is no panic on the answer but who is Sandy Spallin??? I am so full of questions now I don't know where to start LOL
Title: Re: Spalling / Morrison
Post by: aghadowey on Monday 18 November 13 23:12 GMT (UK)
Sorry, forgot to explain that 'Sandy' is a nickname for Alexander.

Earliest Cullycapple roll book I have here at the moment is 1917- will have to look for earlier ones.
See reply #12 for 4 Spallin sisters I found there so far.
Also found an Annie Spallin (Presbyterian, age 4 in JUly 1917) but not sure where she fits in yet. The roll books list # on register, name, religion and attendance but not townland, dates of starting & leaving and father's occupation that will be in the registers.

Will also check some early school photos to see if any of either family are in them.

Again thanks ever so much for everything and much as I want to know all I can, please don't give yourself any trouble.  Though photos would be good as I don't have any unless one of my grandad as he died before I was born.

Can I ask also (yep here I go again) is Aghadowey Parish and St. Guires one and the same or do I have to look somewhere different

Aghadowey is the name of both the civil parish and a townland in the centre of it. St. Guaire's is the Parish (Church of Ireland) church there.
http://www.churches-uk-ireland.org/images/derry/aghadowey.jpg

The Presbyterian Church is just down the road-
http://www.elder-mcgilligan.com/photographs/churches/aghadowey-presbyterian-church/

Alexander Spallen's family were Church of Ireland and there is a family plot there. Son Alexander buried in the Presbyterian churchyard in Faulkner plot (think that was his wife's connection).

I wonder is that where Joseph and Martha and their children who died are interred as I cannot find where they are interred although I do know that Martha Morrison's death was registered in Ballymoney but I guess the death certs. might tell me more.

Any ideas?  And sorry to keep on giving you more questions to answer

Margaret

Your Spallings are not buried in the Presbyterian churchyard (or at least there is no headstone or plot for them).

Ballymoney is the registration district which takes in a lot more than the town itself- actually comes across the River Bann and meets Coleraine district, so Martha may have died quite close to Bovagh. The death certificate will give an exact place but not where she was buried. If there was a newspaper announcement of the death it might give funeral details- really depends on when the notice was placed in paper.

Hopefully there is something cos the few I have looked for in the Death Notices in the Coleraine Chronicle shows nothing and if hers is the same then I am stumped as to where to look as most of the church records I have looked at do not have burial records  ???

Me again,

Yet another question for you if you don't mind?  Can you tell me, do you know if Sandy has any living relations now? And any ideas where I could look next to find out more on the Spallin's. Thanks once again

A friend stopped in yesterday afternoon and I asked a few questions and later an older friend rang (Johnny Spallin worked to them for about 40 years) so I asked LOTS more questions. Can't post most of the information online but neighbour across from where we now live is connected (actually her late husband was) but I think it could be a bit messy for several reasons.
However, neither of my friends remember your Spallings living in or near Bovagh so will try a third friend (Johnny's brother Sandy worked to them for years) at some point to see if he can remember his father mentioning them.

@Margaret Spalling I'm currently using Wikitreethis is the same John Spalling which would your 3 times great grandfather  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Spalling-3 (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Spalling-3)

Bella Morrison/Spalling married a ancestor of mine Samuel Conley and they had a son John "Fifer" Conley and possible another one going by the 1911 census for Carnaboy, however Samuel Conley could have been born out of weblock or Samuel could have took on Samuel Conley's name. But in saying that I've found no birth records as of yet for Samuel Jr.

As for Martha Spalling (1896) born in Ballymoney her parents are Jane Spalling nee Beverland and her father is James Spalling

Hi,

I am looking for Hugh Morrison, b. 1760 Northern Ireland and d. 1839 Pennsylvania, USA.  His wife was Isabella Wilson, daughter of a wealthy man, William Wilson.  After Hugh and Isabella eloped, her father disowned her.  She was born N. Ireland 1768 and died 1852 in Pennsylvania, USA.  6 sons were named Thomas, James, Joseph, John, Matthew and William, all born  in Pennsylvania, USA.  They may have emigrated between 1788 and 1793. Any information on a Morrison family  with a Hugh or Andrew who worked for the Wilson family as tutors would be appreciated.
