Title: Marriage of Thomas Wellham in Mullingar
Post by: peterbroscombe51 on Wednesday 20 November 13 12:59 GMT (UK)
Hello,
Thomas Wellham was born in 1858, in West Ham, London. He served as a soldier and must have made his way to Ireland between 1881 and 1884. He married a girl called Margaret, sorry no surname, and had a son whilst in Ireland, also called Thomas. They must have left Ireland before second quarter 1885, because their second child, Mary was born in West Derby, Liverpool.
On Family Search, there is a wedding for a Thomas Wellham during the third quarter 1882, in Mullingar, but no reference to a wife. This is in volume 3, page 210 of the records. Can somebody please look this up for me and see if this is the correct wedding and also the full name of the bride. If not the correct wedding, can anybody find it and also the birth of their son, Thomas?

You'll need to order the marriage certificate to see the full details. See here for information on Irish certificates with link on ordering 4 euro research copy-

LDS civil index requires you to search for bride and groom separately and then cross-reference the results. On the same page is Thomas' likely bride- Margaret Geoghegan.

When would Thomas have been born?

aghadowey,
Thank you for your quick reply. As this is the first time Irish ancestors have appeared in our tree, I appreciate your comments, and will follow this up.
Not sure where Thomas was born, but assume Mullingar.

aghadowey,
Sorry, must go to the opticians to check my eyes. Thomas must have been born between third quarter 1882 and second quarter 1885, when Thomas and Margaret's second child was born in Liverpool.

Thomas must have been born between third quarter 1882 and second quarter 1885, when Thomas and Margaret's second child was born in Liverpool.

Not really- that's when you are expecting Thomas would have been born. If you don't know the birthdate/year- have you found him in any other records (census, marriage, death, etc.) that give an indication of a date? If, for example, he was born before Thomas and Margaret married then his birth would be listed under mother's current (maiden?) name, etc.

aghadowey,

Have you also found him in later census? 1911 (for which we can't do look-ups) often gives a more exact place of birth than 'Ireland.'

Search for 'Thomas' born c1884 with Mullingar as the registration district I haven't found an exact match yet, just some close-ish ones (but not close enough for me to suggest ordering the certificates):
Thomas Wellan Apr./June 1883 volume 3 page 277
Thomas Whelahan Apr./June 1885 volume 3 page 287
Thomas Geoghegan Apr./June 1882 volume 3 page 287

aghadowey,
Thank you for the possibilities concerning Thomas's birth. From your list I believe Thomas Wellan is the one. In 1885, the family were in Liverpool, and the 1891 census gives Thomas's birth as 1884.

Have you found Thomas in 1911 to see what's listed for birthplace?

aghadowey,
At this moment in time the only census record I have found for Thomas is 1891, but I am still looking
