I am looking for any information on George Bernard McPate who emigrated to New Zealand, in 1927 at the age of 17, on the RUAHINE, from Southampton, England to Wellington. I believe he was in Otago in 1954.

www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz
- shows a death for him in 1967, aged 57.
Also there's a Violet Frances Lyall McPate b. 21 June 1913 d. 1990 - widow?
http://caversham.otago.ac.nz/electors/erform.php
shows them both on the 1938 electoral register. Can't see a marriage - probably sometime in the 1930s after the end of the online public indexes.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KLBG-PMR
shows him in 1957 coming into NZ with Violet Frances and a possible daughter (potentially living).
http://www.dunedin.govt.nz/facilities/cemeteries/cemeteries_search
- burial of George and Violet (includes image of their gravestone).

George Bernard McPate would be my uncle. It was stated that he arrived in NZ in 1957 ( The second Coming ) He was returning from a European trip with his wife Violet and daughter Kaye
There were two children from that marriage (*) who married and had two children, The boy was (*) and a girl whose name eludes me at the moment. The second sibling was Kaye, Born about 1941 I believe. She married a lad named Wally (*), and I believe still live in Dunedin.
Marriage was about 1964-65
George was working for the Inland Revenue ( Income Tax ) department in Dunedin. I believe that was his sole occupation apart from his WWII Military service
George served in the NZ Scottish regiment in WWII, saw action at Monte Casino and Italy generally.
My father (*), was George's eldest brother. And we ( Mum Dad and I ) travelled to NZ in 1959, also aboard a NZSCo cargo liner RUAHINE. I returned to Europe in 1967 then came to Australia at Christmas 1971. My parents returned to UK in 1968 and lived in Thorney near Peterborough UK

Hi Don, Very good to hear from you. The last time we "spoke" was in 1957 at "Kirkgreen" on my return from Germany. No time now but will be in touch soon with more detail.

I believe that this gentleman may appear in the list of World War 2 Appointments, promotions, transfers and resignations 1939-45.
I would be pleased to receive any details of the entry /entries.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,
Do you have any idea where this information or file is held?

Morning.
Were you referring to our online CENOTAPH records as there is a WWII service is listed there. 524404
http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph/search?n=McPate
There is also a probate in the Duneden National Archives for a Charles Bernard McPate 1967.

Hi s58roads
Yes, you are correct in stating that he is mentioned in the "list" you quote above.
[And I'm guessing that maybe your reference comes from a category provided at ancestry.com site ?? ]
All the information given is as follows :
New Zealand World War 11 Appointments, Promotions, Transfers and Resignations - 1939-1945 :
New Zealand Army, Navy and Air Force :
[ This information is extracted from the "New Zealand Gazette". ]
[My note -- the listing is spread over two pages ]
Page 391 reads - The NEW ZEALAND SCOTTISH REGIMENT
The undermentioned to be Lieutenants (temp.) and are to be posted to the 2nd Battalion.
.... two names appear on this page ...
Page 392 ... The undermentioned to be Lieutenants etc .. (is repeated) and dated 28th November 1940.
A further eight names appear, the second of which is - George Bernard McPATE :

Headstone photo - George Bernard McPATE - d. 1967
http://www.dunedin.govt.nz/facilities/cemeteries/cemeteries_search?recordid=32311&type=Burial
Just noting the info Alan has given above - re: Probate file for a "Charles Bernard McPATE" - 1967" ... it does seem that the Archives NZ reference has given an incorrect christian name (Charles instead of George).

Must dash as preparing for a big reunion, but if there was any aka, it would be spelt out in the papers associated witgh the probate. Don't know if we have any members providing a Dunedin Archives branch look up at this time.
Alan.

Hi again s58roads
You may be interested in this also ?
From "New Zealand Army WW11 Nominal Rolls 1939 - 1945" :
McPATE - George Bernard - 524404 - T/Sgt. - Inf. Bde - Embarked 1943
Occupation : Omnibus (looks like ?) Driver
Address : 78 Sidey Street, Caversham, Dunedin [ abbrev. as D'din ]
Next of Kin : Mrs V P McPATE - wife - [same address as above]
Date: 1 July 1943 - 31 Dec 1943
[ My Note : The info as been indexed as "Mcpatc" : the page on which these details are typewritten, is distorted, making the entry a little difficult to decipher in places. Seems that the "e" in McPate has been inadvertently transcribed as the letter "c" ? ]
~ Lu
Edited to add further info.

Hi
Just looking at the notes for Anderson's Bay Cemetery, Dunedin, Otago, NZ - Burial (and some Cremation) Records, there's a comment or two regarding birthplace of your man.
# 36873 - McPATE - George Bernard -- Block 274 - Plot 38
Died 27 July 1967 - aged 57 years; a clerk. Resident of 119 Mornington Road, Dunedin. Buried 29 July.
Informant : R. McLEAN and Son*
Remarks : New Plot; name checked with headstone.
Comments : Cem Bk * shows born in New Zealand. DCC BK* = born Scotland, lived in the province* 40 years.
[ My note: Key to abbreviations -- * : R. McLEAN and Son = name of funeral directors
Cem Bk = cemetery book / DCC Bk = Dunedin City Council Book
The province = Otago Province ]

Hi
I also noticed a 'tree' for George B. McPATE (@ ancestry) ... though having skimmed over it I see that you possibly have already shared photos with this particular tree owner ? ;)
[ STEVENSON / BURT tree. ]
Hadn't earlier come across it, but there is also a link to a record there, as follows :
NZ Scottish Regiment
Lieutenant (temp.) G.B. McPATE to be Captain (temp.) - dated 18 December 1942.
[Seems to be part of the earlier record I mentioned - that which was extracted from the "NZ Gazette" ? ]

Still in a hurry, but -
As pointed out in reply #20 all will be revealed when the archived documents are viewed. Would not be the first time that someone went through life using one set of names, only to find an early official document was not recorded the same way. Differing dates, spellings, order of given names etc. Both of the last two lookups I did for members, required declarations that the differing entries were for the one and same person, before the court would ratify the action before it.
