Title: Robert Morice: Aberdeen abt. 1834
Post by: draarcy on Wednesday 27 November 13 07:45 GMT (UK)
I am tracking a Robert Morice (born abt. 1834) who travelled to Tasmania, Australia on the Broomielaw arriving 26th Nov. 1859.  I know that he came from Aberdeen.  I have been told that he could have changed his name from Morrice. Any information or ideas on how to track back further would be appreciated.

Thanks

The following suggestions assume that he emigrated of his own free will and was not transported. If you can find a death certificate for him in Australia which gives the names of his parents, it would make finding him in Scotland much easier. Also, did he have a special trade? He should be in the 1841 and 1851 census in Scotland. By 1851 he would have been at work and if you can find someone of the same age with the right occupation it might help.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I am hoping to get the marriage or death certificates.  He was listed as a farm servant on the Broomielaw list and was a farm hand/ farmer in Tasmania.  Also Robert's childrens names (in order of birth) were: Robert Ayre, William, James, Mary Agnes, Margaret Janet, George, David Leslie.

The latest:  No record of Parents of Robert on the Marriage and Death registry.

I have chased the Father: Peter Morice  Mother: Ann Falconer case.
I found that there were two other children not listed on the 1841 census mentioned:
Peter born 9 August 1826  Banchory Devenick, Kincardine, Scotland
Anne born 11 April 1830 Banchory Devenick, Kincardine, Scotland

I haven't been able to find then on the 1841 census.

In terms of 1851 census : I couldn't find the parents, perhaps Peter died, Ann died/remarried
I tried to track the other children.  Possibly found Isabel Morice as a servant, James Moras as a farm servant.  But can't find daughter Anne and George.  Other son Peter had married Elspet Chisholm and is listed with her.

In 1859, Anne(daughter) married John Watt, listed on 1861 census.  Then they went to Australia.  Found them in Victoria.  Anne died in 1912.
James could be "James Morise" ploughman on 1861 census. Tracked James to Victoria, Australia as well.  His death certificate (1908) states that he spent 39 yrs in Victoria and 2 in Tasmania before that.  Looking for his arrival in Australia.  Robert lived in Tasmania so maybe he went to Robert.

I came across a photo of James and compared it to poor copy of a photo of Robert that I have.  Some similiarities, but maybe its my imagination & hope.

I would be interested to see what happened to parents and where the missing children were for the 1841, 1851 etc census.

Still hoping for that exact proof of connection.
If anyone can find anything it would be great.

GR2 Thanks for the email.

Poodleback:  I sent a personal message.  Please check your Messages.

The photos I discussed are of James and Roberts not Peter.  Sorry about that.

I am tracking a Robert Morice (born abt. 1834) .... I have been told that he could have changed his name from Morrice.

Please don't read anything into variant spellings. Spelling was a very inexact science until literacy became widespread around the late 19th century. Dropping an 'r' or writing 'ce' instead of  's' at the end of a name do not constitute a change of name. Spelling was how the person who wrote the name down at the time thought it should be spelled.

Don't know if you have verified the parents of your Robert Morice yet but if they are Peter Morice and Ann Falconer, I have a bit of additional information. Another child of Peter and Ann is William Morice. He died 30 May 1896 in St Nicholas, Aberdeen, age 66. Married Catherine Donald 17 Feb 1860 in Old Machar, Aberdeen. His wife Catherine died in Aberdeen 1924. They had at least 7 children - Ann Falconer, Catherine Yule, William, Margaret, Alexander, Robert and James. He lived in Aberdeen when the 1861-1891 census was taken, until his death there in 1896.  Feel free to contact me if you want anymore information on this family. I have no connection to the Morice family, I was researching Catherine Donald.
