Ok, how is the Brigadier doing ?

I am doing the family history with Rod,  Kevin and co.

Hot blast  !!!!   should have guessed.

Don't worry too much unless you find some good photos or recent copies.

Is Queenshill still there ?

Hi Merc,

I'm Sam, John's eldest son.

Doing a little looking into the family history myself since reading Merricks research.

The Brig's getting very old now, his 4th hip is wearing out but still has his sense of humor.

Will be seeing him this weekend at my wedding to Kelly Dinmore (you may want to include into the family tree)

All the best,
Sam

Yes Sir, fantastic, I would like a photo if possible and any history of the house.

My ancestor lived there in the 1860s -80s, Isabella Chalmers, her cousins were the Neilsons who owned Queenshill and Mollance.

Any ideas who owned the property during this time or into the 1890 - 1930 period ?

Much appreciated.     :)

Hi,
What is your interest in Barcaple House?
I have a possible family member - still looking at linking him for sure - who died there in 1878.
What info, if any, do you have of this house please as I have interest in it too.
Currently a Christian society owns Barcpale House called Abernethy trust.
Look at this
http://www.abernethytrust.org.uk/tmenu/baracple.asp?cr=4&p=
It shows a photo of the house.

We are going to do a mini tour of Neilson family interest on our way to the Orkneys and will take photographs !  Have you found a picture of Queenshill ? We would be very interested.   Regards  Vikki

Hi, Sorry I have taken so long to get back but, to be honest I forgot. The records we have of Mrs Chalmers are from a census post the 1st World War. We have Kipp House and behind it Kipp Cottage, you can see a good picture of the house at www.kipphouse.co.uk, which can be found using Google.
My wife says the Neilsons you are asking about had Barstobrick  and Queenshill, there is a monument on Barstobrick hill commemorating the inventor Neilson

Yes, Isabella Chalmers was the person living in Kipp House and ANY info you have would be great.

Her sons were Archibald and Thomas.

Isabellas maiden name was Neilson.

                                                :)

Is that Colvend or Kippford ?    (the boats in harbour)
Is that the view from the house ?

The boats photo is Kippford, most of the pictures are Kippford, the big beach is Sandyhills at or near Barend. The house can only just see the estuary, so no that is just a view of Kippford moorings

Hi all,
I realise this thread has now been going on for some time but just want to see if anyone can help me out please.
I am related to the Fildes family, some of which went up to Scotland to be with "family members" and one of which died at Barcaple house.  Many were born in Kirkcudbright area in 1840s onwards.
Can anyone enlighten me as to the link between the Fildes and the Neilsens or Barcaple at all?
Thanks in advance
Claudia

My daughter came across this chat room by accident and has forwarded it to me, since I believe I may have answers to many of the questions asked. I've done considerable research on the Neilson family-- (James Beaumont Neilson was my great great grandfather. My mother lived in Mollance for 5 years, my aunt in Barcaple). I corresponded and exchanged info with the Brigadier. If I can be of help to anyone, let me know.  Stew

Thomas Patersons parents would be good, Stew  ....   :)

But anything in relation to these two properties would be good.

A branch believes they stayed in Mollance in the 1870s, but they must have meant Queenshill.

Strange, they BOTH burnt down   .....   :o

Would have loved to have talked to the Brig, he knew so many of my non Neilson relatives as well   .............   :'(

Re. Mollance and Queenshill and the Neilson family; our village hall in Ringford was erected by James Beaumont Neilson in 1861 and we will be celebrating it's 150th anniversary next year with a local history exhibition organised by the hall committee. A copy of the Neilson family tree or any other information of any kind would be most useful, can you help please?

Queens hill The Ice house is still there aswell as the walls belonging to the walled garden and what looks like an old farm house and buildings but as someone already stated there are holiday cottages there now . I spent a week there last summer.I think that the family are buried in Tongland church yard and that there are Busts of the family in a fenced off area

Hi all,
Sorry to add to an already-long thread!

Some of my ancestors were servants at Queenshill during the nineteenth century: Mary Johnstone, (1828-1883) who was a house servant (apparently) from the 1830s until her death, and Mary's sister Agnes McGeorge (originally Agnes Campbell Johnstone, later Agnes Hay) (1834-1912) who is shown at Queenshill in the 1861 Census.
The Johnstone family lived at Leggatecheek, (from at least the 1830s - 1880s) a house in Ringford. I don't know if this house was part of the Queenshill Estate or not; their father, Thomas Johnstone, (d 1856) was a cooper and dyer by trade.
Mary and Agnes's sister Jane (Jean) married the farmer at Greenhill - another nearby farm.
I would be very grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of where I might find out more about this family (I did wonder if there would be papers from Queenshill, but as the house burnt down, I suspect not?) Or would be happy to share any information about 'my' Johnstone family if it would be of use to anyone!

Many thanks

Helen

Hi Helen,
The saga continues!
Have a look at Ancestry.co.uk for details about Thomas Johnstone - he was born about 1776 in Kirkcudbrightshire/died 1856 in Tongland, Kirkcudbrightshire (Ringford village is within the parish of Tongland.)
You will also find more info. there about his three daughters and their families.
Leggatcheek is still standing and lived in and certainly at one time was an estate house for Queenshill - Hope this helps you, Sue.

Hi again,
Many thanks for the reply, Sue. I shall do some more investigating on Ancestry.com!
I've been lucky enough to find out quite a bit about the Johnstone family, although (typically) my direct ancestor is Helen Johnstone, a fourth daughter, (born sometime between 1828 - 1834 as far as I can work out) who appears in censuses etc, but doesn't appear to have a birth or death record!  ::)
I did take a walk past Leggatecheek, (having been very pleased to find it on a current map, and having family in the area) but I know nothing about the history of it!
Thanks again.

Helen

Hi, I'm related to John Lindsay Scott who I was under the impression lived in Mollance House and also farmed Dryburgh farm up to his death in 1888. He was a woollen manufacturer, who set up Kingholm Mill in 1857 in Dumfries; Son of Robert Scott the tweed manufacturer. I recently visited the Scottish Registry in Edinburgh and saw his will/probate records that clearly had wages owing to the Dryburgh Farm manager, labourer etc and butler, footman, maid etc at Mollance. I think he was faming sheep on the land for his business. How do the Neilsons fit in. Was my great great grandfather renting? I wish I'd printed out the whole will but only printed parts as it was over 11 pages long.

Wow, fantastic information!  I am related to you as Helen is also my direct ancestor and is my 3rd G Grandmother.  She lived in Edinburgh for a while. I have a lovely photo of a cottage her husband was a coachman for.  I would love to get in touch. My 2x great grandfather was born at Leggatecheek in 1855, John Johnstone ( Hellen's frst born))

John Neilson, brother of James Beaumont Neilson, was my ggg grandfather. I have done extensive research on the Neilson family but have no pictures of any of them or their properties. I shall follow this thread with great interest. Are we related in any way?

Mollance was the family home of my g. Great aunt Marion(Neilson) and her niece Aunt Mary(Steel) for many years, and Aunt Mary died there in 1920. I have an extensive research on the family of Neilsons who were fascinating.. If I can help anyone, please ask. Likewise viewing any pictures of these places mentioned or photographs of family members would be most welcome by me as I have none.
Good luck to everyone in their searches. Best wishes, Islay
