Balls Family - Hart - Hall the Merchant Rows & King Street Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
I believe great great grandfather Benjamin Arthur Balls was born about 1860, at Dartford, Kent, England. Have not found his father, mother, or family yet. He was a fruiterer at 131 King Street in 1881, apparently his own grocery business with wife Charlotte Matilda, maiden name Hall, (Great Yarmouth family bakers of bread & sweets), born in Acle, Norfolk, England in 1857 Charlotte Matilda Hall baptised 15 Feb 1857 at Acle Norfolk, her parents (Samuel and Elizibeth Hall). The 1881 Census has Charlotte Matilda (Hall) Balls, age 22, and Charlotte's younger sister Anne Hall, age 19, working as the fruit grocery shopmaid, and a young domestic servant Miss Ann M. Crow age, 16. Benjamin Balls vanishes before the 1891 Census, Wife C.M. Balls ran the fruit grocery, moved to location at 159 King Street in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk... 1891 Census lists Alice Balls, (age 8), FLORENCE MATILDA BALLS, (age 7), Reginald Balls, (age 5), and Percy Balls, (age 3). In this household also did reside domestic servants and tutors. The 1891 Census listed these folks as Lena Fox, Martha Groom, and Harriet Tubby... Charlotte Matilda`s husband, Benjamin Arthur Balls, passed away 24 Dec 1890 at Great Yarmouth. Charlotte Balls remarried to Mr. Edwin Hart listed in the census of 1901 had moved to Civil Parish: Lambeth, St. Catherine Brixton, (Lambeth-Brixton), London, England with daughter Florence Matilda Balls, then age 19, and Charlotte's new, second husband Edwin Hart, age 54. Charlotte Matilda Hall (Balls) (Hart) was 44 years old at the time... Re: Charlotte Matilda Hart "It looks like she moved to Prittlewell Essex to keep a confectioner's shop, she probably moved back to Norfolk eventually. Charlotte Matilda (Hall) Balls) 'Hart' died Sept qtr 1931, age 71. Norwich (4b 112)" information was provided by Suz, (thank you!)
My grandmother is FLORENCE MATILDA BALLS who married in 1903, age 20, at Gt. Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, a Mr. Edmund Stanislaus Atherton(b.1880). She is in Alberta, Canada, Sept. 1913 crossing Sweetgrass International Border married to My Grandfather Otto Smithman... FLORENCE died October, 1972 in Helena, Montana USA..... Additional info and photos at http://mcmath.tribalpages.com/?userid=mcmath&x=9&y=9
Any further information about ancestors of the Great Yarmouth Hall family, merchants row 50, or Balls of King Street families would be helpful, Thank you, Gary

Hi Suz,
I appreciate the quick results you have provided to my inquiry, I am very new at RootsChat, and am most impressed. I shall modify my record on great grandmother Charlotte Matilda Balls and great grandfather Benjamin. I had no idea where my great grandmother Matilda was buried or a clue to what year she may have passed away. 1931 amazing, not that far back at all. Thank you so very much for your help. Gary

Dear candrjm,
I am grateful for your observation that Charlotte Matilda Hall father's name is listed as William, not Samuel on the certificate. Very likely though Samuel, not William Hall is the father of Charlotte Matilda Hall (Balls) and her siblings. The belief is, that Charlotte's older brother William was there with his sister, and that the parish clerk simply by mistake inscribed the name 'William' as father on the certificate.
The quest now is for further information relating to great great grandfather Samuel Hall the baker of bread and sweets in the mid 1800's at Merchants Row 50, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.
Samuel Hall's 1800's ancestral record so far has not been determined save for recent census information back to 1861 see (today's post) provide by 'Suz'. The search for the ancestral lineage of Benjamin Barber Balls of the same period continues.
Thank you,
Gary

I would first check parish register to see if William had been transcribed correctly.

Hi Suz,
I appreciate that you have provided the census record showing Samuel as the father of Charlotte Matilda Hall, it would not be unusual for the brother "William' to be in witness at his younger sisters certificate of marriage, likely it was a clerical error that William appeared as 'father' on the certificate. Samuel it is...

Hi Suz,
I visited grandmother Florence today, born some 130 years ago, I visit her grave often. I tell her what I've learned about her ancestry and England. While she was alive about all that I knew is that she was born and lived in England, did not even know where about in England until ten years ago. Grandmother passed away in 1972. Gram made the best bread and sweet rolls and pies you could ever imagine. She was poor, her husband, a Danish-German sailor had died early in his life and they were not well to do then. Grandmother every year put in a sizable vegetable garden and a large mixed flower garden, and always had something baking in the oven. She was a fine English grandmother, a wonderful woman. I wish to thank you for helping define her ancestry there in Great Yarmouth. It is no wonder that she made such wonderful breads, she coming from a lineage of that profession. I appreciate messages you have posted to help me understand a bit more about her historical lineage. Gary

Dear Candrjm, Dec. 38th, 2013
Much of the information you have provided is new to me, and I sure appreciate that it verifies and corrects family, dates, and locations of the Balls Family of Norfolk.
There is still a bit of mystery to resolve, and if you wish to see what information there is thus far, please visit tribalpages at this link:
http://mcmath.tribalpages.com/?userid=mcmath&x=9&y=9
When the story page on George and Nancy McMath opens up simply type-in mcmath in the Security box, upper right of initial page as a password... You may then click on the Balls family name to investigate the extent of what is known, or perceived so far.
Thank you so very much for your help with my English family ancestry.

I've been looking at your Mitchell line and I see that you have Sarah Mitchell married to Robert Mitchell.
I think that Martha Mitchell was the illegitimate daughter of Sarah Mitchell and that Sarah was not married to Robert but was his daughter.
Baptism for Martha Mitchell:

The 1871 census records Sarah as follows:
Sarah Mitchell

Relationship to Head of Household: Mother
Birthplace: Middleton, Norfolk
Schedule Type: Household

Household Gender Age Birthplace
Self Martha Balls F 37 Massingham, Norfolk
Mother Sarah Mitchell F 60 Middleton, Norfolk

This looks like Sarah's baptism (in the Middleton parish register) at the bottom of the left hand page and records her parents as Alice and Robert

I suspect that Martha named her father as Robert Mitchell (using her grandfather's name) on her marriage certificate.
I wonder if the Mitchells moved to Massingham after Sarah was born as there is this baptism in 1816 in Massingham:

Dear Candrjm, Sunday Dec, 29th, 2013
Re your post: "I've been looking at your Mitchell line and I see that you have Sarah Mitchell married to Robert Mitchell." Yes, only hours ago using the marriage certificate info naming Robert I decided to do this, I shall now remove Robert, your logic about Sarah's declaration of fatherhood seems plausible ie: "I think that Martha Mitchell was the illegitimate daughter of Sarah Mitchell and that Sarah was not married to Robert, but was his daughter."
You and 'Suz' have been of marvelous assistance in helping me along with defining the Hall and Balls families of Norfolk and greater England, and then further defining the Mitchell connection nearly back to the late 1700's.
Thanking you both again,
Gary

Dear candrjm,
It has been a number of years since acquiring the information I have on the Mitchell, Balls and Hall line of ancestry. There was some confusion with names at that time, some records were not in alignment with others, however certain names of the household did match very well with known Balls family history. Those names that were common with Samuel and Elizabeth Hall in particular, were Anne Hall a younger sister of, and Charlotte Matilda Hall herself.
Am eager to find out, but am not really certain about any information other than of my grandmother Florence whom I actually knew well. Initially there was very little information to go on when I began this quest. Florence Matilda Balls and her siblings, the servants and tutors of the household, and Florence's parents Benjamin Arthur Balls and Charlotte Matilda Hall are known to be factual, however working back in years from them is conjectural thus far. I appreciate the clues you have provided today, but do have really no way to advance this material or theory. Perhaps another document will come forth to provide the answer. Thank you for the added information on the Hall family of Norfolk.

Balls Family - Michell- Hart - Hall the Merchant Rows & King Street Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
Believe that it is established that Benjamin Arthur Balls was born 1860, at Dartford, Kent, England, and that his father was Benjamin Barber Balls (1831-1971) born (Barnham, Broom, Norfolk) who was married to Martha Mitchell (1832- ????) and that this Benjamin Barber Balls was the son of Benjamin Barber Balls (1801-1871) born (Barles, Sufolk, England) who's wife was Mary Ann of Blunderston.
It was found that Martha Mitchell (Balls) was born about 1832 at Great Massingham, Norfolk to an unwed mother Sarah Mitchell born about 1811 at Middleton, Norfolk, who's parents were Robert Mitchell (1777-22 Feb. 1834) of Great Massingham or Kings Lynn area, Norfolk who was married to an Alice Jordan of approximately the same age and location (1774- died 08 Aug. 1848 at Great Massingham, Norfolk). Nothing further is known of this lineage or family history save for Sarah's older siblings John born 1809 and William born 1807.
Benjamin Arthur Balls was a fruiterer and grocer at 131 King Street in 1881, in business with wife Charlotte Matilda Balls, who's maiden name was Hall, (Great Yarmouth family bakers of bread & sweets), Charlotte Matilda Hall was baptised 15 Feb 1857 at Acle Norfolk, her parents were Samuel and Elizibeth Hall.
