Title: Onions family walsall
Post by: organicgardener on Wednesday 04 December 13 08:58 GMT (UK)
On the 1911 census my ggrandfather John Alfred Onions stated that 13 children were born and eleven were living. I have a record of the nine on the 1911 census my grandad Alfred was living away on a farm. I did have the 1901 census but can't find it now, and my subscription to ancestry has run out.
On familysearch I found Ethel Onions b22nd November 1899 and so only one child is unaccounted for.
Could someone be really kind and look up the 1901 census for me please.
They lived in Rowley Street Walsall.  Thank you.

Thanks Kay it looks like Liza S is the missing one as Harold b 1902 and Arthur b 1904 make thirteen I will have to investigate Liza S and Ethel a bit more as no-one has ever mentioned them.  Chris,

Relooked at the 1891 and Liza S could be Liza L which would tie in with the birth of an Elizabeth Louisa Onions in 1881 in Walsall

Edit - She was working as a general domestic servant in 1901 in Walsall

Thanks so much Kay, that's why I couldn't find Liza she was Elisabeth Louisa. Does it have an address in 1901 for her ? I will have to look for a marriage now.  I still can't find Ethel  b 1899 you would think she would be on the 1901 census.

There is a death for Ethel at 1 year old on FreeBMD, so I think she died just  pre the 1901 census in Mar Qtr 1901 Walsall

Elizabeth Louisa onions dec quart 1903 Walsall. Joseph bates or William walker according to Freebmd.
Don't know whether church or registry office as the Walsall marriages don't give the church or reg office on staffordshirebmd. The church could be st George or st matts  in particular and St. Paul's but there are loads in Walsall.

It's not st George's. I want to go to Walsall archives if I get chance I'll look up st Matthews and St. Paul's but not sure when.

Keep an eye on www.freereg.co.uk as there are lots of Walsall records on there, I know st matts is one of the ones being done. It's updated once a month. I have a cd with some Walsall st matts baptisms and burials on which has a lot of stuff on.

Thanks Weste, that's where I have been looking, where did you get the cd from ? All my Thackers and Onions family were christened at Saint Matthews and the Walsall family history centre have been very helpful to me too, being so far away makes it hard, still without computers I wouldn't have found anything as my mum wasn't interested it was only me remembering that grandad came from Walsall that got me started.  Chris

It seems Joseph Bates who married Elizabeth (Liza) Onions who was my grandfathers sister had a son named Norman A Bates who married my Auntie Ivy (mums sister) so they were cousins !

Thanks so much Carole I never thought to look on the 1911 census I was looking at the 1939 register and on the Free BMD there was only Ernest J b 1912 that I found. I see on 1911 there were three younger children.

Two younger children.

Oliver and Harold. From GRO they are Oliver Joseph b 1904 and Harold Thomas b 1908
If you look for them in 1939 you find the whole family (Oliver has married but Harold is with parents ) with one redaction which I assume is your Norman.

Thanks so much ckha89M I didn't see those two on the 1939 I must have been looking at the wrong family as it was just mum and dad. I can see it now although I can see now why I was getting it wrong Elizabeth L is the mother and I was looking at Liza S- Eliza S as that was what she was in 1901 by 1911 she was Elizabeth L. The whole family have been a nightmare as 1851 they were down as Iunions and in 1861 as Amons I had to think about accents and realise "Eye me name be Ununons" would be how they answered the questions.

I think L and S are a bit interchangeable in that loopy handwriting.

re pronunciation - I have Onians in my tree. We pronounce it Oh NYE Ans  not Unyuns!
