Title: 24 South Maine St, Coatbridge, Lanark, Scotland
Post by: Rosinish on Saturday 14 December 13 16:27 GMT (UK)
Hi,

Does anyone have an old photo of the above address please? & can anyone tell me what the street is named as nowadays?

I'm assuming it would have been part of a tenement block.

Regards,

Annie.

Still there, just shorter.  In Google Maps Bank St and A89 or if you wish to go earlier you can see it here http://maps.nls.uk/view/74415190  This link has some old photos but perhaps not old enough http://www.monklands.co.uk/memories

Thanks Ambly,

I would like to know if "South Maine Street" is a continuation of Main Street as the former is what is written on the certificate?

It would make sense but it is not identified as such on the maps. I do know that at the turn of the 20th C there were residents identified as living on South Main but where this exactly began I do not know.  You could email the Coatbridge Library with the name and address of the family and ask where it began. The Property Valuation's might help but we do not know who you are seeking or the year(s) involved.

Hi Don,

Do you have valuation details as I would prefer to PM the details?

The year was 1932 but possibly a couple of years either side?

Annie.

Not for 1932 you would need to email the library.

South Main Street is listed here:
http://merryston.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=21&Itemid=44

You need to register and be a member of the site, before you can see what it says about that street. It's free to join, apparently!

Maybe the building right at the 'back' of the photo can be identified?

Maybe the highrise estate / housing block at the back can be identified?

The flats are Dunbeth Court and the building works are the new shops on the Main Street with ASDA in the background.

South Main Street was in the Whifflet area of Coatbridge, it no longer exists, I believe it's somewhere near to where Margaret Street is today.

Nice one Donnie H

It was exactly where you say it was.

You can see it on Old Maps  http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html  put in the co-ords  273407  663516  and select the 1912  1:2,500 map. It's still there on the 1967 map.

Hi Ammack,

South Mains Street was demolished some time in the 1960's.  It could be argued that at one time it was the most southerly street in Whifflet.   On the west side of North Road, it ran at right angles to the main A725 Coatbridge to Bellshill road.  It was parallel to, and to the south of Hospital Street.  Margaret Street joined the west end of S.Mains Street to Hospital street.

The buildings comprised, if I remember correctly, two storey brick tenement properties on both sides of the street.  The tenements on the south side had an open outlook to the rear (Goatfell on Arran on a clear winters day), and those on the north side of the street formed the south side of the rectangular development that was known locally as "The Big Building".  This series of tenements stretched along the full lengths of S.Mains Street, north along Margaret St, east along Hospital St, and south again on the A725 to rejoin S. Mains Street.
No 24 would have been in this building, as the houses were numbered odd to the left, even numbers to the right, commencing from the A725 end of the street

The following reference should take you to a 1947 map of the area
http://maps.nls.uk/view/82892073.  (The west end of the street is on http://maps.nls.uk/view/82891956)

South Mains Street is near the west edge of the map in the NW corner area, and your aiming point is the Rosehall Institute building.

Sorry I don't have a photo, but I'm sure that there will be one on one of the Monklands web pages.

Regards,

Istrice

Hi & thanks to all who have given me links, up-to-date info. & directions etc.

I do realise it was in the Whifflet area but...................the fact that it was 24f would suggest a 3 storey building?

I will check out the links though.

Regards,

Annie.

Ammack

There is a website called Britain From Above that has an aerial view showing the houses on South Mains Street and Hospital Street taken in 1929, it doesn't show the full street but you will get an idea of what the area looked like. if you use the link to the NLS map in Istrice's post you will get your bearings, you should be able to pick out the Rosehall Institute Building at the end of the street.
If you do a search on the site for whifflet you will see the image, the tenements are on the right hand side, and as you will see they are 2 storey's high, although the number of the house is 24f that wouldn't necessarily mean there were three storey's, some of the houses would be accessed from stairs at the rear of the building.
If you register at the site, which is free, you can zoom in on the image.

regards

Donnie
