Title: Where can I access the Nunhead Cemetery burial records for free ??
Post by: Stardust_3000 on Tuesday 17 December 13 17:43 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I am trying to locate an ancestor's grave within the Nunhead Cemetery, Southwark, London and have looked on the Southwark Council website and found they are asking £18 just to provide a square and grave number and the graves location (only if it can be accessed safely).

My ancestor was buried in 1854 and I have a feeling their grave might be in the "nature reserve" bit of the cemetery. I just find paying £18 a bit excessive when they are just providing two numbers. The cost of getting to the cemetery is about enough for me...

Does anyone know if the records are available to be viewed ideally for free anywhere else ? For example, Southwark Library or even a local Family History Centre.

 :D

Hello Stardust,

The Find A Grave website lists over 1000 grave sites from this cemetery.   If you have not already, You could try that and perhaps you will have luck!
Also,  they have a photo request queue, you could put in a request.

At one time you could access the records personally under supervision at the offices at Honor Oak Crematorium.

The bishop's transcripts for Nunhead 1840-1871 are held at London Metropolitan Archives. Images up to 1869 are available on Ancestry. If you can't get to LMA and/or don't have an Ancestry subscription, you may be able to access Ancestry free at your local county or borough library.

The Bishops Transcripts don't provide the grave locations and plot numbers, they are contained in original registers at the cemetery.

I'm aware of that. After I'd gone to bed, I realised I'd misinterpreted the question  ::)

I know this is years and years after the initial enquiry but I thought I would just write on here for the sake of anyone who searches at some point...….  www.deceasedonline.com has the burials for this cemetery.  It is free to search and it tells you the date of the burial and name of the person and how many people are in the grave.  You then can pay £2.50 (have to buy a min £5 voucher) to access the actual register of burial.  In the free part you also get the grave reference though it doesn't tell you whether or not there is an actual stone.
Anyway thought I would add this, having just found seven people from one family in one hit.
Cheers
Neil
