I am trying to find the parents of my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather Isaac Brooks who was born in 1818 in Dunbar. He married Helen Stirling on the 30 Sep 1840 in Falkirk and died in Stirling 13 Feb 1898.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi diy
Have you viewed his death entry on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to see what was recorded for his parents' details?
Monica
Added: :-\ That won't help will it...parents' details blank.

John and Helen after their marriage in 1841 (as transcribed)?
Isaac Brocke 25 nailor b. Scotland
Ellen Brocke 24
John Brocke 64 nailor b. Scotland
Address: Geo Square Camelon, Stirlingshire
-
To help others searching, the family in 1851:
Isaac Brookes 36 nailer b. Dunbar
Helen Brookes 30 b. Falkirk, Stirling
William Brooker 9
Mary Brooker 6
John Brooker 3
Isaac Brooker 1
Address: Geo Square Camelon, Stirlingshire
From her death entry in 1884 and reported by Isaac, Helen is given as the illegitimate daughter of a Mary Anderson.

Just adding this info in case it is relevant, given we have a John Brooks with Isaac in 1841:
www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=11262892
If John Brooks is father to Isaac, maybe a clue to mother etc.

Hi all,
There is a John Brook who married a Margaret Kellie, who had a daughter Jessie in 1824 at Dunbar. I find a Jessie Brook in 1841 census in Haddington staying with a Helen Kellie and a Robert Kellie a draper in Haddington. There was an Alexander Brook brother of Jessie there too.
In 1851 there is a Wm M Brook 50 yo staying with her brother Robert Kellie in Haddington, she has son Robert Brook with her. So this family is looking promising, but no record of Isaac.

looks promising, I wonder where Isaac was during the 1841 census :-\ I wonder if there has been a transcriber error with one of the names?
-
wonder if this is perhaps a different Family, John Brook vs John Brooks. The FreeREG entry monicaL linked to has a John Brooks who is also a nailor. However dates don't match census records. The John Brooks mentioned above was born 1797 which would make him 44 in 1841 census not 64 mentioned below ???
-
I think you might be mis-reading the entry from freereg... :)
The year of 1797 is the child John's birth and christening year in Dunbar, to parents John, a nailer and mother Janet Richardson.
Also showing here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTTT-HJ4 - original image will be available on Scotlands People too.

It is the entry we had above:
John and Helen after their marriage in 1841 (as transcribed)?
Isaac Brocke 25 nailor b. Scotland
Ellen Brocke 24
John Brocke 64 nailor b. Scotland
Address: Geo Square Camelon, Stirlingshire
FreeCen have the surname indexed as Brooks.

I think that the John Brooks brn 1797 looks like he could be Isaac's father - right name, trade, birthplace however the age does not match that in the 1841 census (20 years out). Could the age really have been 44 but listed incorrectly or is the John Brooks in the 1841 census Isaac's Grandfather?
-
It is the father of the baby John Brooks who was born in 1797, also called John Brooks and married to Janet Richardson, who is the nailer by occupation. That is why I thought he was a good contender for your Isaac born later. As we have, Isaac and then a John Brooks, aged 64 and a nailer like Isaac in 1841.

Just trying to give you further possible family for Isaac to follow up on...
You have Isaac with family in 1851 in Falkirk. There is another Brooks you might want to follow up on:
Hugh Brookes 48, nailer b. Dunbar
Isabella Brookes 12 b.Dumfries
Address: Cart Road, Vicinity of Camelon, Falkirk
Isaac and family were living at George Square, Camelon at the time of the 1851 census.
Monica
Added: Just seen this https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTTY-4YC with a Janet for mother as Hutchison not Richardon. Can't figure out, but adding for reference now.

Thanks for your help Monica :)
-
With that Dumfries birth place for Hugh's daughter in 1851, thought this might be the Hugh's family in 1841:
Hugh Brookes 35 nailer b. Scotland
Elizabeth Brookes 45
Agnes Brookes 8
George Brook 14
Isabella Brook 5
Helen Brook 2 Months
Address: Queensberry St, Dumfries
Can't see anything on Family Search for this family group to help further for now, nor on FreeCen to confirm the transcript :-\

I've been looking at Isaacs wife Line.
The IGI shows that Helen Stirling died 11 Dec 1884, mother was Mary Anderson. I looked the cert up, she died in St. Ninians, of paralysis, registered by her widower, Isaac. Mother, Mary Anderson, Agricultural Labourer, no father's name is given.
I think Helen may have been illegitimate and her mother Mary Anderson went on to marry a 'Stirling'
I can find a record of Mary Anderson marrying a James Stirling 30 Jan 1824, 2 years after Helen was born.
Are there any possible records that would verify that Mat marrying James is the same as mother of Helen?
Thanks

Hi I am also researching Isaac Brooks and the many other Brooks from Falkirk then Barrhead. Which direct line from Isaac are you researching?
Karen

Hi Karen,
I'm tracing the Barrhead line, Isaac Brooks->William Brooks->John Brooks. If you have any info you can share it would be appreciated. The challenge I am having is pulling together history on Helen Stirling.
Thanks,

Hi I think Isaac Brooks father is John Brooks b1777c who married Janet Hutchison (from family search.org)
One of Isaac and Helen's children was Janet Hutchison Brooks b 20 Oct 1856 Falkirk.
John Brooks and Janet Hutchison had three other children that I can find
John b 1797
Helen b 1802 ? Not sure about this date
Hugh b 24 May1802 Again not sure if I read this correctly
There are so many Brooks in Dunbar and Dysart then Barrhead
Also look for David Hutchison married Elizabeth Amos in 1771 in Humbie, Eat Lothian
Alexander Amos married Margaret Gerdon(Jardon) who had two children
Elizabeth b 9 July 1743
Elizabeth b 2 Sept 1746 both Haddington
Family history on the net at two in the morning is just the best lol

I had a look at relationship between Janet Hutchison and David Hutchison/Elizabeth Amos. It looks like from familysearch that the Janet Hutchison married to John Brooks was born 1779/1780, however the Janet Hutchison born to David and Elizabeth was born 1772, so not certain they are the same. I'll do some more digging.
Thanks
