Title: Drinkwater/Florey marriage -Standlake? Oxon 1846
Post by: Drinks on Sunday 05 January 14 18:35 GMT (UK)
Dear Chatters,
I am a rootschat virgin, so please be gentle if my etiquette is faulty.
Born a Drinkwater, I have traced my paternal line from Yorkshire to a George D (b 1849) in Standlake Oxon.
From the Floreys of Standlake genealogy document I have the following

45. MARY8 FLOREY (JOSEPH7, RICHARD6, ROBERT5, ROBERT4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, ROBERT1) was born February 17, 1828 in Standlake. She married JULES DRINKWATER April 11, 1846, son of JOHN DRINKWATER.

Child of MARY FLOREY and JULES DRINKWATER is: George born about 1849 in standlake.

By 1851, the census records a widowed Mary and child as living back with her mother Hannah Florey in Standlake.

Can anyone offer a lead on the origins or fate of Jules DRINKWATER or his father John? I'm guessing they were from Oxfordshire, that the marriage was in Standlake, Witney or nearby, but can find no trace online.
Any help gratefully received before I treck to the Oxford History Centre.
Thanks
Drinks

Could this be the marriage?  Standlake is in Witney registration district.

Jun 1846 5 brides and 5 grooms listed including
James Drinkwater
Mary Flory

Incidentally one of the other brides listed is Amey Flory possibly a sister?

There's a death for a James Drinkwater in Jun 1850 Witney  :)

There are some farmers in 1841 called Drinkwater including a James - could be your James.

Richard Drinkwater 25 farmer
James 23 farmer
Robert 21 farmer
Ann 20

Hi drinks,

In the Northmoor marriages "Banns" there is this entry;

20-2-1876 George Drinkwater of Standlake & Ann Buckingham.

Unfortunately, the transcripts I have from the Oxfordshire FHS only go unto 1840 for marriages
and I do not have the Standlake registers to check.

Also this baptism;
24-12-1854 Anne Buckingham d/o Benjamin & Sarah, Labr.

Meant to add that Northmoor is a neighbouring parish to Stadnlake.

Hope this helps.

Alan

Possible in 1851 Standlake are this family.

John Drinkwater 64 born Brize Norton Oxfordshire

Isaac 26 born Standlake
David 23 born Standlake

Father and sons farm labourers

1841

John 55
Ann 55
Ann 21
Isaac 15
David 13

No James with them unfortunately but there are Flory family members living close by.

Dear Millie and Ribbo,
Wow -I am astonished and thrilled with the speed and detail of your responses to my enquiry. Rootschat is definitely a motherlode and there are some real nuggets in what you have sent, though it may take some sorting before I find my Jules.

I am fairly convinced  by your information that my Jules was this James marrying Mary Flory in June 1846 ( thanks Millie)  also that James was the 23 yr old Farmer in /Standlake in 1841 as the age fits well with Mary Flory's (thanks again M).   Not sure yet how he links in with other Drinkwaters listed in your various posts. I'll need to work on the dates and ages. James/Jules should be dead by 1851 census -Mary was a widow by then. If he is the son of John and Ann then he must have been working away from home at the time of the 1841 census.

Ribbo, thanks a lot for the extra details on marriage of George D and Ann Buckingham and Anne's parents. More than I had already. George and Ann were the couple that moved to Yorkshire.

Once again, I'm overwhelmed by your responses, and thank you both loads. I thought I had reached a dead end, but now the way ahead is much clearer.
Cheers

Millie, Alan and Nigel,
Thank you so much for all your help. You cleared up the identity of 'Jules' and have provided so many new links, leads and confirmations that my Drinkwater heritage has at least a couple more generations and almost a hundred years from poor young George D.
After losing his father just before his 2nd birthday, and his mother at 16 yr, he didn't find love/marriage till he was 26. Little wonder he moved to Yorkshire to see if his luck would change.
So many thanks for all your brilliant help

Hi Woodentop,
Oxfordshire was a real hotbed of Drinkwater’s, particularly in the 1800s when the families were really big. My Branch of the family can be traced backwards from Standlake to Brize Norton and then to Bampton, but that’s as far as I can confidently go. I have noticed a cluster of Drinkwater’s in Islip but can’t find a link with the Brize Norton bunch. Do let me know if you find the link.
Cheers

Hi again Woodentop,
The Islip branch of the family go back further than I thought. I just found a John Drinkwater = Mary Broom marriage in Islip dated 19 th July 1764 (Ancestry citing Oxfordshire Family History). If you are not there already, that should give you an ancestor to aim for!
Cheers

I have got to Broom, that is where I am at a dead end. 🙄 I shall keep toiling, we are probably cousins.

The Drinkwater lines are generally very big. My mum was one of 16 children. That is the Drinkwater - Cox line.
