Title: Landewick ???
Post by: Lleucu on Monday 06 January 14 16:10 GMT (UK)

Does this name ( Landewick - seen on Census) ring a bell with anyone? Is it somewhere in Flintshire/Denbighshire? or might it be a phonetic  attempt of a Welsh place name by an English enumerator?

Any suggestions will be of interest.

Nearest that I can think of is Llanddoget  - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/DEN/Llanddoget/index.html

But, as WR suggests, could you give us the census ref, please.

Hello friends, thanks for all your suggestions - food for thought indeed.
It's on 1851 census.
Jane Williams widow F 48 with children Joseph, John, Jane and Samuel all living in Storeton, Cheshire
( in the Wirral ).
On checking, I see its in Denbighshire - somewhere!

I think that Jane was previously Phillips baptised in 1808 in Hawarden, married Roger Williams of Storeton. Have not been able to find her after 1861 and wondered if she had gone back home, where ever that was.
My favourite guess is Llandyrnog.

Is there a place called Landswyck Carol?
Thank you all for putting your thinking caps on - much appreciated.

It doesn't help decipher the 1851 location but this may be her in later censuses, latterly given as born Denbigh,Denbighshire

1871  3741  24  15   (with her daughter's family)
1881  3570   9   12
1891  2873  104  2

There is a death in 1892 whicgh gives her as born 1801.

Roger

Hello despair,
Thanks very much for that information - very useful.
I found Jane on the 1871 and 1881 census but for some reason FindMyPast did not come up with the goods for 1891.
Did you happen to notice where she was at that time?
Re the death in 1892 - did you think it was the same person?
Thanks again for taking the time to help me out.

In the 1891 census she is still with her son in law Joseph Bennett-the address is just given as Villqage,Storeton.I have re-checked the census reference and it appears to be correct(she is given as born 1801).The burial record seems very likely to be her given as Storeton,Bebington.

Hi Roger,
Yes,  you are quite right - I finally caught up!
I'm puzzled now about her birth date which does not tally with her  baptism. Of course she might have been seven when she was baptised ( seems unlikely) or more likely no one was sure of her age - it varied by a few years on each census.
Thanks for everything.
