Hi All,
I'm looking for some help finding a family on the 1851 England census. I have the family in 1861 and 1871.
Here are some details of the LYNESS family (all info gleaned from the 61 and 71 censuses);
Head - John LYNESS, born c. 1813 - 1816 in Ireland. Occupation "sugar house labourer".
Wife - Mary LYNESS nee CARLIN, born c. 1818 - 1820 in Ireland.
Children born around or before 1851;
Margaret LYNESS born c. 1844 in Ireland
John LYNESS born c. 1849 in Liverpool
Catherine LYNESS born c. 1852 in Liverpool
Family living at 13 Raymond Street, Liverpool in 61 & 71.
Going off the birth of John c. 1849 in Liverpool the family should be on the 1851 census. I've not been able to find this family in 1851.
Many thanks for reading, Rowan Tree :)

I have looked too but can't see them. However, it is a very easy name to mistranscribe. Is it worth getting the birth certificate from 1849, it shows on freebmd, to see what the address was or doing a search to see if they are already at 13 Raymond Street?

I definitely agree with pinning down the details of the children whose births span 1851. (I find "circa" dates so discomfiting!)
Catherine LYNESS born c. 1852 in Liverpool
This (Catholic) baptism, perhaps?
St Anthony's, Liverpool
17 Aug 1851
Cath LINUS, born 9 August 1851 to John & Mary. Godparents James Alpin & Sarah McNully.
Family's address: Pollock St.
Added: John & Mary went on to baptise further children at St Anthony's:
Elizabeth LINAS with LYNESS written above, 8 May 1853 (born 27 Apr).
William LYNAS on 25 March 1855 (born 16 March).
In each case their address is the same as for Catherine's baptism. If they were in England in 1851 they may well be in Pollock St.

I can't easily find Pollock St in 1851, but it starts at RG9 piece 2731 folio 66 page 35 in 1861. If you're lucky some of the longer-term residents may be traceable there 10 years earlier.

Thank you everyone for your help and advise.
A particular thanks to "avm228". I hadn't found those baptisms (the various spellings of the name LYNESS is really slowing me down), they seem like such promising leads. I'm also going to get stuck into pinning Pollock Street down in 1851.
Thanks again everyone :)

Hello,
I have tried to find Pollock Street- not mentioned in street indexes nor are some of the other streets in the neighbourhood. :-\
Will have another search around too.

Heywood, you're a star.

Hi All,
It doesn't look like Pollock Street is on the 1851 census.
I've just taken a look at a street index to 1851 Census of Liverpool and there is no Pollock Street!?
Index;
http://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/Streets1851/Streetindex.htm
I'm going to look for Raymond Street and the surrounding streets and see what that shows up.
Addendum: Just looked through the whole of Raymond St and found nothing that looks like the LYNESS family. I'm now having a think - lol ???
-
Oh dear. I may have led you up the garden path - perhaps Pollock St was not yet built in 1851?
The writing in the baptism register is such a scrawl, but I have trawled through several pages in which the mystery address appears for numerous baptisms.
I now think it might be Tatlock St.
-
Pollock Street is West Derby district not Liverpool.
Will now look for Tatlock Street ;)

No worries avm228,
I'm happy for any and all suggestions. The interesting thing about Tatlock Street is that is was very close to Raymond Street. So...
I'll be back after a seach... ;)

Cheers Heywood,
I think Tatlock is looking like a much more likely candidate (and that writing in the register was basically a scrawl. Points to anyone who can make anything at all out of it - lol).

Hah-Ha! I think I've found them at 18 Tatlock Street.
Transcribed as follows;
John Simes - 39 (1812) - Ireland - Sugar Baker
Piece: 2177
Folio: 546
Page Number: 7
I couldn't have found them without all your help. Cheers everyone.
Chuffed, Rowan Tree :D

Well done :D

Brilliant news - well found :)

I have John on my database as Linus (1861) and also as Simes (1851), but would never have considered them to be the same person.
Having read this topic, I’ve now studied the 1851 enumerator’s writing (on cd) and feel that it may well say Linus. If you look at the entry for the first of the lodgers, Edward King, there is almost no difference between the S of Simes and the L of Lodger, and there are similar examples on adjoining pages.
Bryan.

Thanks avm228 :)
Hi Bryan, thanks for your input. The occupation in 1851 is also a match. And I've found marriages of several on the Lyness/Linus children from the 1851 census that help confirm the 1851 and 1861 family are one and the same.
Thanks again everyone, Rowan Tree :D

Hi,
I seen your post I have a relative Patrick Lyness born 1841 in County Down, Ireland who came over to Liverpool who had Parents John Lyness and Mary.
