In 1871 there was there was a shipwreck in Bettystown. Two ladies saved one of the crewmen and he was taken to Mrs. Grants Hotel to recover from his ordeal. The ladies were Mrs. Fox and Miss Jane Campbell. Does anyone have further info on the ladies and is the hotel still there.

The newspaper reports suggest that Miss Campbell and Mrs Fox were residents of Girley, Kells.
Looking at Meath court records of the time, the name of Maria Grant crops up a number of times in connection with a public house in Bettystown

John Fox had a drapers shop in Market Street in Kells in 1870. There was also a Patrick Fox who was Relieving Officer for Drumbarrow; and in the 1881 Directory, Patrick Fox and Bridget Fox are in Cross Street, Kells where Bridget Fox is a grocer.

Then there was Matthew Fox who was a farmer at Girley in the 1901 census

It seems to me from the newspaper article that Miss Campbell and Mrs Fox just came together for the rescue. The article says they were walking apart. . I have been in touch with the RNLI and they confirm whats in the paper but don't have any further information. It would have been handy if Mrs Fox's first name was given. I'm sure someone out there has more info.
