I'm looking for any information about my great grandmother, Ada, Saunders, born 1866 in Houghton Regis. I have found her on the 1881 and 1891 census but can find no further information about her or her parents, who I believe were Charles and Elizabeth, possibly of Toddington.

I presume you have details for her after 1891 census?
-
No. I have nothing after 1891. there is a death in 1933 but that is for Ada J. Saunders in Bedford and I was unsure if it was her or not.

To my knowledge she never married. My grandmother was Lilian May Cartwright Saunders. I have a copy of her birth certificate which gives no name for the father. Family legend has it that Cartwright was his surname.

I would suggest therefore Lilian is the illegitimate daughter of Ada, and she married shortly afterwards?

Hi
As far as I can see either Ada must have died before 1901 or she did marry but Lillian May kept the name of Saunders. Lillian appears as May Saunders age 12 in West Ham 1901 niece to Ada's sister Jane and her husband George Court RG13/1572/? Pg40. We can't do 1911 look-ups but she is easy enough to find as Lillian Saunders.

May Saunders was brought up with her cousin Millie in West Ham and later Dunstable and Luton. In the 1911 census she is living with her grandmother, Elizabeth Saunders, her aunt Jane Court and her cousins Millicent and Arthur Court. There seems to be no mention of Ada but I believe she was alive until at least 1927 as my mother remembers her.

I'd like to add you guys are brilliant and really helpful. Many, many thanks.

Ada Dudley born 1866 died Luton District 1934 Vol3b, pg439

Sorry Keyboard86 I didn't notice you'd already posted this death :-[

An online tree has her marrying James Dudley in 1900 in Bedfordshire. If this is correct you need to be looking for an Ada Dudley after that, not an Ada Saunders.

Sorry - info posted previously

Thanks anyway - your help is much appreciated.

Hi again, the only concern I have re Ada is that your mother remembers her to at least 1927, surely she would have known whether married or not?

My grandmother was brought up by her aunt. I get the impression Ada did not have a great deal to do with her daughter. This may well have helped her marry eventually.
