Title: YOUNG Lookup Request in the Isle of Man
Post by: tenezledroit on Saturday 11 January 14 23:06 GMT (UK)
Hello there,

Would anyone be kind enough to look up a baptism for me in the Isle of Man? I am looking to find the baptism entry of William YOUNG, who was born circa 1813, possibly in Douglas. His parents were John and Margaret YOUNG, and I would also be keen to locate their marriage entry. I can only assume that they were married in the Isle of Man too.

Many thanks, Steven.

Hello Carole,

His parents' later lives are well documented, as they moved to Preston in Lancashire, some time in the 1830's. They appear in censuses in Preston, and they are buried in Preston cemetery.

Regards, Steven.

there is an 1815 bapt (18150402 - iMuseum have it at Braddan but I have a note that at douglas St Georges) of Wm to John Young + Margt Fullerton (chk via www.imuseum.im)
They had another child Joseph in 1821 but buried 1822 at Douglas St Georges
Young is a rare name on Island - they had another child Sarah in 1812 - I have note of a deed (? sale) in 1807 - SSS Oct 1807 #24 from Kelly to John Young in Onchan (which covers Douglas as Douglas in civil parish of Onchan but ecclesiastical parish of Braddan) - you can buy copies (not cheap tho) of such deeds from library@mnh.gov.im

Hello Frances,

Thanks for the reply, and for your time in looking at this matter for me. Both John (who worked as a gardener) and Margaret were apparently born in Scotland (according to the censuses taken when they were living in England) yet they lived in the I.O.M. from about 1813 until at least the early 1830's. The following other children were born in the Isle of Man, again, according to later English censuses:

Mary Ann YOUNG, b.c. 1814 in Castletown, Isle of Man
Susanna YOUNG, b.c. 1816 in 'Isle of Man'
John YOUNG, b.c. 1821 in 'Isle of Man'
Jane YOUNG, b.c. 1823 in 'Isle of Man'
Isabella YOUNG, b.c. 1826 in 'Isle of Man'
Margaret YOUNG, b.c. 1830 in 'Isle of Man'
Elizabeth YOUNG, b.c. 1831 in Castletown, Isle of Man

I might have to investigate what happened to the John Young & Margaret Fullerton who you suggested as a possible match for the parents of the William I am looking for. If they appear in the I.O.M death registers or burial indexes then I can rule them out as not being the folks I'm interested in... as I do at least know where they ended up!

Kind regards, Steven.
