John Douglas Lightbody b 1899 Hamilton, was killed in Action over Belgium in 1918. He was an ace pilot with several victories to his name and is buried at Scheldevindeke Church in Belgium. Each year he is commemorated and this year a special ceremony is being held. They are looking for any descendants as it would certainly be lovely to have a living relative present along with the other dignitaries being invited.
Long shot I know but if anyone is related or knows someone who may be - as luck would have it have not found anyone following his family tree! - please contact me.

Hi Sue,
Lightbody is a very well known name in the town of Hamilton. A family of that name has had a bakers shop in Cadzow Street for generations. This may or may not be the family you are looking for. If I were you I'd contact the Hamilton Advertiser newspaper, they may print your request.
Good luck.

Thank you - I am in contact with the baking Lightbodys but I think we are looking at a different line. They are looking into seeing if there is a connection.
-
Thanks for the newspaper tip - may very well do that!
I'm doing this on behalf of the Belgians who are trying to find the info. My stepdad (a Geordie ex Grenadier musician) will be playing in the Belgian band at the ceremony - he's an honorary member.

Can I ask when the ceremony is?
I happen to know a family called Lightbody in my village and I'll try and find out if they are related.

Hello Sue. This one caught my imagination & so I've expended some SP credits & done a bit of research for you. It looks as if you may have to go to Pennsylvania to find any family!
Of the family listed in the 1901 census Grace died unmarried in 1953, Christina did not marry until she was 42 so I think it's unlikely she had any children & Archibald died at the age of 5 in 1903. However, there were another couple of sons born after 1901 (I can't find the family in 1911), George Williams in 1907 & Duncan Clark in 1901. George died in 1989 so his d.c is not available to view online but there is no record of a marriage.
However, Duncan emigrated to the USA and is shown in both the 1930 & 1940 US censuses living in Pennsylvania with a wife and 3 children - 2 sons & a daughter. Duncan died in 1969 but I imagine that at least some of the children should be around.
Hope you are successful in contacting someone. Best wishes Blanche

The ceremony will be on 10th November this year.

Thanks for the SP family info - I too couldn't find anything on the 1911 census. Was hoping I might find someone before heading down all the brother and sister lines. Like you I find a challenge irresistible!

There is one tree on Ancestry showing three living children but not much else.

I don't think you'll find anything other than the brother and sister lines.
John was only 19 when he died and there are no marriages in Scotland 1915-1918 that match.
-
George Williams Lightbody b. 8th March 1907, Hamilton. Died, 1989, Hamilton.

Thanks all for your replies - you've done a fantastic job and given me more clues to work on. The 1911 census was a coup!

It looks as if the only one of John's siblings we haven't looked at is James b. 18 Sep 1903. Unfortunately he doesn't have a middle name & there are enough James Lightbodys in the records to make it difficult to find out if/when he married & when/where he died. So a request to the Hamilton Advertiser may still be worthwhile.
Well spotted with the 1911 weeaza!

James Lightbody, Architect, & Janet Willet Fletcher, both 31, married 18 Sep 1935, Hamilton.
I think James died 1984 & Janet 1994 in Ayrshire. :)

Thanks - you seem to be on a roll!! :)

Just found a Lightbody Facebook group so going to post something on there! Oh the powers of the internet!

I forgot about the other Lightbody business, I should have remembered, especially as this little whisky jar (holds 1 gill) has been sitting on my kitchen window ledge for about 20 years!
It will be late Victorian - early 20th century and it was empty when I got it :'(
-
Ah - what a lovely piece of history. I know the father was John D Lightbody and a grocer. Can't find any reference to whisky though!
-
It was very common for a grocer to sell wines & spirits.
In the 1911 Motherwell directory -
John D. Lightbody, Licensed Grocer, 72 Merry Street. (that would have been the shop address).

Hi Sue - Following up on Duncan Clark Lightbody who settled in Pennsylvania 1923. He naturalized in PA May 29, 1929 but I could only find the index so no info other than he had one son John Douglas 1 year old at that time. He is found in 1930 and 1940 census records. He died July 1969 in Philadelphia but I've not found an obit.
His children were
1. J Douglas born in the 1930's PA md unknown and was last found living in Reading PA from 2006 to 2009 at address removed. There appear to still be Lightbody names found with this address. I have not yet found a death record or names of his wife/kids but he did have 2 daughters.
2. M C. born ca 1930 d. 2006 have not searched for more on her yet
3. Robert b. 1930's I thought he was the Robert Lightbody who died April 2001 in Montana but I found an obit and do not think it is the right man. Off to do more digging!
-
Great digging! I knew Duncan had offspring but hadn't attempted to track further. Its amazing how many people are helping out with this research. Have three 1st cousin twice removed contacts but suprisingly no descendants so far from the Hamilton area. Keep up the good work and thanks!

In my tree I have John Greer m Isabella Lightbody in 1912. They lived at 7 Struthers St Glasgow, and had a daughter Helen and a son James.
James married Jessie Henderson and had four daughters.
Maybe this is another avenue to explore. :)

Wow Sandy - so glad you've come to Rootschat - very excited now! Will PM you.

Wow, welcome John - this is more than I could have hope for - thrilled! I think John Douglas Lightbody being someone's uncle is the closest relative I can get as he died so young and childless. Would love to get in contact with you. Sandy has my email.
Best regards

Hi,
I am researching my Stepmother's side of the Family which is Lightbody. I am looking for info on Duncan Clark Lightbody. I know he married a Bertha but do not know her maiden name or when and where they were married? I also know there were 3 children, John Douglas, Marjorie C____, and Robert. did they marry, to whom and when and are there any children?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Jim , welcome to RC :)
Duncan Clark Lightbody born 1901 Hamilton Lanark ?
Looks like he went to America in 1923 , Familysearch have the family on the 1930 and 1940 Census.
Think he would have married Bertha in America.
If the above information is correct it might be better to move this topic to the USA Board.

My name is Sandy Maicher. Duncan Clark Lightbody married to Bertha was my grandfather. My dad is John D Lightbody. I heard through a friend that someone is looking for us for some research.
-
I'm also researching the Lightbody family. Bertha was my aunt - maiden name Morris. They lived in Phila. PA. I'm interested in finding info on their children. John, Marjorie and Bobby birthdays/spouses/deaths. I found a John "E" Lightbody on the Find a Grave site - Birth Dec. 12, 1928 - Died May 31, 1999 in Ocala, FL. - could this be him?
