Post by: theolddear on Sunday 19 January 14 14:16 GMT (UK)
I am looking for the birth of Nathaniel HOPEWELL 1695. I need to know who his parents were as there is some discrepancy! ???

FS has two entries for Nathaniel Hopewells, baptised 1695

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FWXM-3P2

and

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FWX8-R9Y

Do either/both of them seem likely to be the one you're after?

Why not request a copy of the images from FS to see if that makes the situation any clearer ?

You say there's a discrepancy with parents.  What choices of parental names do you have?

The parents were John and Christian which are the names given in both cases to the parents so I guess one of them is correct.

The baptisms on Family search are contributed entries.
This is what Family Search say  about them....
"Some of the information in the IGI was contributed by members of the Church about their ancestors (approx. 430 million names). The quality of this information varies. Duplicate entries and inconsistent information are common. Always verify contributed entries against sources of primary information."

The clue is in the source given by familysearch: RG4 - 8, the non-conformist registers. BMD registers has both entries, RG 6 1606 and RG6 1368. Unfortunately detail is pay per view.

National Archive catalogue identifies both as Quaker Quarterly meetings Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire

Thanks for all info. Does this mean that Nathaniel and parents were actually Quakers? Nathaniel actually went out to America and died there.

Yes - at least at the time of the baptism.  And since the data appears to be 2 different copies of the same basic information, that with the commonality of parents strongly suggests only one person.  To confirm date, or understand why 2 different dates are recorded, you'll need to look at the original.
